I can't tell where it's coming from - but it doesn't sound like any coil whine I've ever heard before. I want to say it sounds exactly like this:

Interestingly I also have an MSI Mpower like the guy who posted the video (maybe not the same chipset - I have a Max Z87). There's a comment about turning off LEDs in the ECO section of BIOS... I can't find any such thing, though.

This isn't a new build, I haven't changed a component in almost a year, but this just started like a month ago. I've been able to test all fans save for GPU/PSU fans. I do have one mechanical hard drive, but it doesn't sound like it's coming from anywhere near that section of the case. I keep my case pretty clean so there's not much dust buildup.

It's very intermittent, but doesn't seem to be related to what I'm doing (i.e., happens regardless whether CPU/GPU are under load). Loud enough to be pretty annoying at times, though.

Anyone seen this before?

GPU and PSU are Corsair AX1200 and EVGA GTX 970 FTW.
 
Find a cheap stethoscope from an tool/automotive place. Maybe harbor freight or northern tool.

.. you can separate the extension and leave just the cup. It works well for narrowing down a more specific direction a noise can be coming from.
 
I haven't gotten around to finding a stethoscope, but I dug into my case the other day - and now I'm even more confused.

I tested one of my GTX 970's by itself (I have two), the squeaking still happened. So I tested the other one and it was gone - I figured maybe the fan on the other one was dying. Except that the next day the noise came back (although not as bad).

I feel like it's a bit of a stretch to assume both cards would have the same problem that would start happening at similar times after ~10 months of use, but changing the GPU configuration definitely affected whatever's going on.
 
messing with anything can effect a noise.
I spent 15 years as an auto tech and there is nothing more annoying than someone to come in with an intermittent noise/electrical failure that comes and goes as it pleases.
Or wasn't there until I picked up the car and put it back down after a simple oil change.
It is best to change only one thing at a time when attempting to find problems. Even just moving wiring or jostling the case can change it.
 
Well, I ordered a stethoscope off Amazon so hopefully I'll be able to figure out what it is.

It's just weird because I've been building PCs for almost 15 years now and never heard anything like this. I've had coil whine before, and had a few hard drives and case fans die, but those were always obvious.
 
That video sounds like fan bearings to me. The fans on my H70 do that as they please. It comes and goes whenever and I've been too lazy to replace them. If it was constant I would have done it a long time ago.
 
Since I checked both my video cards, maybe it's the fan bearings on my PSU then...which is a bit of a shame, since one (of two) GPUs would be eaiser to RMA than a PSU.

What are the chances it's a capacitor going bad? I read they can make noise while dying - but that it's a consistent noise, which this definitely isn't.
