just built a new computer running windows xp with verizon dsl. Started to get a boat load of popups and spyware on my machine. Now I can't access the internet. I have downloaded and ran adware 6. And deleted all the spyware. And I have norton antivirus, to which i have no viruses. The only thing I can think of is just reinstalling the operating system, but I don't want to do that. Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice would be great advice! Thank you for your time!

Ok, well i don't understand why it's happening but what you can do is, get another spyware remover program like spybot. Then i would clear out all cookies in the documents and settings folder. Then I would delete all internet content from the temp and internet temp folder. then if that don't help run the adaware programs and virus scan in safe mode.

Run spybot as well, and even something called HiJack This. However, your not giving us nearly enough information. Can you get other apps to work, like AIM e-mail etc? Can you ping external sites? Or have you lost total connectivity, or just IE? You just have to dig in and find out where the problem lies along the connectivity chain, and go from there.

Always run multiple spyware removal programs. Personally, I use Ad-Aware and PestPatrol. In the fast changing world of spyware, none of the mostly smaller vendors can keep up like a powerhouse like Symantec or McAfee can with viruses. But a little precaution never hurt. The best way to control spyware is to know how it tricks you and how to avoid it.

well actually its pretty weird because i have ethernet connection to the modem just fine but i just can't get to any external sites. pretty much no internet at all. But I am gonna try all of your advice. I definitely appreciate it. I think I am just gonna have to dig a little deeper in the connection chain too. I will let you guys know how it went! Thanx again!!

Verify your IP settings for sanity's sake, and reset the modem. Also reboot your computer to rule out line problems.

If you can't get to external sites, then how are you posting?

He's on broadband. That won't help.

Preventive measure when all this is sorted out. Use your VCR for porn. It is safer. :) Though I joke about this I am serious about it too. XXX sites will mess you system up and they seem to be the ones who create the new spyware variants too.

On a clean install of windows the first thing you should do is enable the firewall on your internet connection. Then visit windows update and download and install all the critical updates. Then get some AV installed and updated. Then you can get a firewall of your choice and disable the windows firewall.

Sounds more like a browser hijack than anything else. He may even be able to ping external sites, but not be able to access them with the browser. HijackThis is probably the best bet for a fix.

I agree that its either a browser hijack or an IP issue. He should convert to Firefox anyway, save himself the future trouble, and rule out (or confirm) the browser as the problem.

In addition to "Spybot-Search and destroy", and "Ad-Aware", I would also download "TrojanHunter"(30 day free trial). After running anti-virus, ad-aware, and spybot on MY computer(and supposedly coming up clean), I recently tried trojanhunter, and it found 5 trojan files(3 classed as spyware), and 1 registry key linked to a trojan.

Check your hosts file as well:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

the ONLY entry should be 127.0.0.1 localhost

this same thing happened to me, and im having a shit time. I have a connection to my braodban modem, but I cant connect to anything. Did all the spyware stuff, still no luck. Dont wanna reformat, but its lookin like im sol.

I'm having an issue when I open interent explorer it will attempt to install Microsoft Project. I click cancel to stop the install and it will start again. I eventually get it to stop, then I go to my favorites and access hotmail link and bam - it trys to install again. I already have MS Project installed on my computer.

I've run AVG Antivirus, ad-aware 6.0, spybot S&D all with the most up-to-date reference files. They all return nothing, yet I'm still getting highjacked in a messed up way. I know others are experiencing this problem also. A few computers at the place I work also have this problem.

Suggestions?

Yes, this happens to any computer that does not have project installed on it. The ones at our office do this. It is some hijack/trojan that has been missed by: Norton AV, AVG Antivirus, Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, and Hijackthis. I'm really not sure what to do besides wait for someone to discover the solution.
