It would seem that several business groups are opposed to the SPY ACT that passed the U.S. House of Representatives last week. Ironically, some groups claim it is too strong, while others claim it is too weak.

The Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass Act (SPY ACT), which passed the House Wednesday by a vote of 368 to 48, would prohibit taking control of computers to send unsolicited material to others, diverting the Web browser, modifying a computer's settings and keystroke logging. The bill would make it illegal to collect personal information without permission and it allows fines of up to US$3 million for some violations.

It's about time they did something about spyware, and of course the business groups would oppose this, but once again the politicians screwed it up.Why include the provision that people can no longer sue adware creators who make the spyware? It's alright for the government to prosecute the spyware users, but it's not alright for citizens who have been directly affected by them to seek compensation?
