My question to everyone is why do we put up with this BS. As I look at all the threads it is amazing to see how many computer problems are caused by spyware and hijacking and all the other shit that goes on all in the name of advertising. I am sick of it. I know we can't do anything about a virus. The guys that spend all thier time writing a virus need mental help. There is something we can do about spyware etc.
Please write to your congressmen and senators. Google your State and find out who they are and then email them. I am not an advocate of more government but I feel this is an area where government can help. Lets try to end this madness.

You are preaching to the choir here, but you might as well add in world peace and stop the terrorists while you are at it. As long as there is a free and open internet made up of nothing but singular individules writing code, we will have some sort of malware out there waiting to leach itself onto you. No government regulation or law can change the fact. If you take the appropriate precautions, you will never have to worry about any of that. ;)
 
Maybe Sen. Orin Hatch, Tipper Gore and the MPAA could help. :rolleyes:


Actually, the very last thing we need is any additional government involvement in the Internet. They have helped enough already. Besides, it would require a federal bureaucracy larger than available bandwidth, wouldn't it?

What we need are informed users. The longer the ignorant go unprotected, the longer spammers go unchecked.

Its nice I only have to see spyware at work where we use windows, firefox helps is though plus about 6 other tools I have to keep it out of my work boxen. Face it spy/ad/scum ware is here to stay. Do what I do and make some money on the side my cleaning out friends computers.

Recently, I stopped fixing their computers. I started a "three strikes and you are out" program. Some learned, some didn't.

I'm beginning to lose faith in some people because they just don't get it. Maybe if they buy a new computer every few months they will learn. Either that, or they stay offline. Either one suits me because I have invested countless hours perfecting installs for clueless people only to see them screw it all up in a few days, but that is all over now. Welcome the new and improved mean me. :D

My brothers and sisters and friends are perfect for the 3 strike rule but I will always help my mother because she's my mom.

Convert her to Firefox and Thunderbird, and get her away from Outlook Express, Incredimail, or whatever other "Sin Against God" e-mail program that she may be using. That'll go a long way towards fixing her up against the bad guys.

I put my mom on Firefox, along with AVG,spybot,adware,crapcleaner,spywareblaster,etc.etc.
Now she dosent get much crap on that Boxen

Same here, always messing with my mother's PC. Finally got sick of cleaning it up, so I had her let me format her hard drive, put 4 different anti-spyware programs on there (and set as many of them as possible to auto scan, because she'll never run them), anti-virus (again, auto-scan) and firewall... Then I converted her to Firefox.

Haven't had a problem sense. :)

As far as the whole spyware thing goes, yeah, it'd be nice if it didn't exist, but you know what? It's not a problem for me anymore. Get enough anti-spyware software, use Firefox (no reason not to), and you're pretty good off...
 
Education Education Education!

Next time you fix that person's PC, take a little extra time to explain why these things happen and how to prevent it. Like everything, it's only going to get worse and worse, and prevention will be the only medicine.

Also, I sometimes employ scare tactics. Tell people that stuff they install allows people to steal their money and crap like that. My dad's so paranoid now that he bareley uses the net, and doesn't install anything before calling me. He even deletes word docs to conserve precious disk space. (Oh and tell them the blue 'e' is a virus and not to touch it).

Plus, I took the net away from pretty much everyone at work a couple of years ago. They didn't need it, and it was far too distracting. Makes my job very easy.
 
spyware? what spyware? :p

I rarely aquire any spyware
but I do get good money to make it disappear from other peoples boxes :p
only problem is once I fix em up
they dont come back :p
