Spray Bombing Camo

Had a buddy tell me he wanted to camo PC case, and that he'd pay me decent for a mid-tower case I already own if it was done in a desert or jungle camo. The more i think about it, the more i think it's going to be a pain in the ass to get it to look right with spray paint. It's just not enough surface area to do good camo without getting up close to it and having it too thick, or run. I don't even think I could get the camo to look right out of my old mans spray gun, and you can adjust the hell out of it.

I figure it would turn out 10x better with an air brush, really don't know if I want to invest money into it for 1 job. I'm hoping someone out here in the [H] has an idea, method, or tut. on how to do sweet camo on the cheap.
Any advice on how to go about this, or even just links to other camo cases for ideas would me most humbly appreciated.

You can pick up an inexpensive air brush kit that uses canned air (same as the stuff you use to blow dust out of computers) as the propellant at a local hobby shop.

first spray your base colour for camo... greem or muddy brown...

then masking tape is your friend! ;)

Yes, start with a good base color.

What type of camo are you striving for? - woodland? - desert?

Have you made any stencils for the patterning yet? Leaves & twigs are
good for woodland patterns. Outdoor objects are your friends. :)

Thanks for the replies, I was looking into getting one of those inexpensive hobby airbrush kits. I've seen some guys that can do real magic with those to Tamiya WWII models.

I'm still torn between desert or a jungle camo.

As a last resort I know a guy who has some leftover OD green or whatever it's called, it matches the green they painted the old willy's jeeps with. It's not camo and it would cost more than a few cans of spray paint, but it would probably look more historically accurate than my camo. Shoot it green, then stencil the big white star on the side of it.

I'm so conflicted... :)

Krylon sells all the colors you'll need in ultra-flat varieties: OD, Beige, Black, etc.
They actually call it Camo spray paint :D
Other than that, I would say a good base coat, and then masking tape.

Realistically, military surplus stores sell the real camo paint pretty cheaply. Just pick up a few cans in the colors you need, and have at it. The other advantage is that the real paint is scratch and water-resistant.

When applying it, just remember that its a non-uniform (so to speak) pattern, so really theres no need for a stencil. Be sure to seperately spray moving parts so they dont become jammed together!

Also, have you cosidered WWII style? Just a simple olive green coat of paint with a possible black stenciled "USMC" at an odd angle on the side.

Be sure to post the results when you are finished! I'm looking forward to seeing this!

Yeah, I think i'm gonna spray bomb it, it's gonna be desert camo or straight OD green, let me get a picture of the case I'm gonna do it on up.

I have it sitting here, and the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of it being camo, definite stunner for a $50 case
I have a gaggle of LED's laying around, I might switch the front bezel blue LED's to green, or red.
It depends on what dude wants, but I talked to him this afternoon and I get the feeling he's gonna be broke for a while. Doesn't matter, because I'm going ahead with this anyway. Worst case scenario I keep it, or sell it cheap on the forums. :)

Starting a worklog on this..not a great mod, but i'm cutting and painting.

I've seen cammo applied by spraying a sponge, then using the sponge as a stamp. Probably takes a bit of practice, though,
