Hey guys... so I recently built a brand new rig and really wanted the Cooler Master HAF 922 Case, however I have a serious distaste for black cases with raw steel interiors... to me this just takes away from the entire feel and appeal for the case. So with the awesome cooling features of the 922, and needing a mid tower case, decided to give an idea a shot.

I had done some searching on here about whether or not anyone had used the Rust-O-Lium Spray Bed Liner from Autozone, specifically how thick it applied and the texture to it. I had no real luck finding any threads or pictures of this being used, so I decided to give this a shot myself.

After completely gutting my case from all parts, plastics and wiring, gave it a whirl.

This is the before, with the nasty raw steel interior

And here is how it turned out. I am very happy with this product, but I do have a couple of gripes. First off, the texture as you would expect is very rough and the finish is the consistency of 600 grit sandpaper, but I kind of wanted this because afterall, the HAF series is very "military-esk" and this really toughened up the case. Secondly, because of this rough texture, the sides were VERY hard to slide off. This was simple enough to fix by sanding it down more smooth and applying some flat primer where the track for the door is located.

The cans run $8.99 and a single can was barely enough to do the side panel interiors, and the interior of the case. Those of you with Full towers, will want 2 cans. The other great feature of the texture is it hides imperfections. This stuff will run very easilly and the cans are under high pressure (moreso than spray paint) so drips and runs can happen if you dont keep the can moving quickly. If you do get a run, just dab it up with your finger, smooth it out and then spray over it after it dries and the texture is reapplied.

Tell me what you guys think!

Looks top-notch. I also don't care for the silver/gray interiors on cases. Maybe that's why I'm not a big Lian-li fan.
Good job.

Looks very nice, Good job :)

I also hate cases that are black exterior with silver interior.

But the CM Haf-X is all black inside and out. I know its not the same size case though :)

Yeah, I noticed that it was black, i think thats one of the perks of their flagship case. This case is pretty big for a mid tower. I was just happy that it was more than long enough to accomodate the GTX 580.

Ive always had Full Tower gaming cases in the past.. the CM Stacker, Antec P182, etc... I'm loving the form factor of this case and it fits nicely on my desk.

Great look and from the pics, worth the time/money put in.
Matte finish > Gloss (interior at least)

Looks great

I would have some concerns about grounding though. You might want to back and make sure the grommets for the mainboard risers are clean and that other chasis mounted components (like your power supply !) aren't smewhat isolate. Building up a potential from your case will lead to component death.

I was ahead of you on that concern.

The thickeness of the spray is not very thick... in fact, this stuff would make a horrible bed liner! I left the mobo spacers in the holes so that they did not get filled with the spray. When I was finished, I removed the spacers and installed new ones so there was no material touching the board.

There is no additional concern here, expecially when compared to bare steel.

Rereading your post, I think I see your concern. As mentioned, the risers are clean and shouldnt be an issue, as for the power supply, I will make sure the mounting screws arent too built up.

Speaking of which, I actually wasnt aware that anything was actually grounding on the case itself..I thought it was all handled through the 24 and 8 pin connectors.

That looks really nice, I would definitely be interested in doing that myself, with a less gritty feeling though.

The chassis is grounded through the PSU, the motherboard, and potentially any drives mounted. If it wasn't grounded, the computer wouldn't be properly shielded for EMI and a person may be shocked (rare but possible) handling the case (old amplifiers had this problem).

I had thought about bayliner, but like you said it is very rough. I wonder how wrinkle finish paint would do.

I think that looks awesome. I was expecting to see something along the lines of Rhino Liner, but the matte finish looks great, not too rough. I might steal this idea for an upcoming build.

I was expecting something similar too. Really good results, it looks awesome.

i have a HAF 932 and i have been wanting to do something like this for a long time, i moved all my parts into a CM Storm just because the inside was black lol

You took it to another level. Great improvisation. I will definitely use this technique in there future if needed.
Resembles a powdercoat job. More people need to do this instead of spray paint.

Wow, that looks great. Pretty fantastic work from what I can see.

post. for my memory. Im going to test this on a lian li case today

Nice, please post pics!

A little advice... spray the can for about 3 or 4 seconds before you point it at your PC the first time you use the can... the contents are under a TON of pressure and it will spray VERY heavy the first time, and may cause an instant run. I found this out with 2 different cans when testing on a spare atx case.

Just a little heads up!

Sounds like your average spray can. Does placing the can in warm water first help even out the spray pattern?
I usually place all of my cans in warm/hot water before use, so I can get a steady spray pattern for an even coat.
Since this is a different type of material, I would to see if it works with bed-liner also.

going to do this today. taking apart the lian li. will get pics up soon

It's probably almost identical to regular spray paint, just there are additives in the mixture that create the textured feel.

The warm water approach should work.

I didnt try that with mine since I left the can in the sun for a bit which heated them up a bit and helped even out the spray... one thing I did notice though is that since its sprays so thick, it can gunk up the nozzel fast so either clean the nozzel immediately after spraying, or dont plan on using it later once it drys as this is WAY thicker than standard spray paint.

Ok. This didnt go so bad. It is a little thick in some spots. I went through 1 can and got about 1 coat. I'm going to let it sit for 72 hours to dry then coat it again. Only a couple runs, but thick in 1 or two spots. I think the second coat may be able to cover up any of the runny spots that i dabbed off.
I used windex to get all the finger prints off.
Obviously I pulled the WRX out of the garage before spraying :)

I'm not to worried about the case, its my HTPC case so I can sacrifice it.

one thing I always liked was the removable mobo tray

If this doesnt turn out I'll just powdercoat my real Lian Li Case that I use now.
Thanks for the idea

It will turn out nice! It took 2 coats to make mine nice and uniform.

You have to admit though... for what it is, it works great!

Oh, and you dont have to wait 72 hours to reapply, I reapplied 1 hour later, and thats all it requires.

cool. well im home for the rest of the night. I put the car away and everything. Ill work on it tomorrow then. thanks!

update
got the second coat on. It cleaned up all the imperfections. I was also able to spray the mobo tray. Will assemble today and post pictures.

Thats the beauty of this stuff... its textured finish hides all imperfections!

How do you feel about the texture? Its rough, but not too rough in my opinion!

How durable is the finish? I used the Plasti-Dip stuff which came out looking really nice, but it peels off easily.

This stuff bonds very very nicely. It will not peel off... its not like the plastic dips where it bonds to iteself rather than the item itself.

Afterall, this IS a bed liner spray (even though it woudl suck as a bed liner)

texture isnt bad. it is a big rough. but from a distance its not noticeable. I wonder if this could add some sort of sound dampening?
the only thing i didnt spray were the plates for the pci slots and the hard drive cage . I may keep the plates chrome or spray them, or buy black ones. Ill probably keep the hard drive cage aluminum, may be hard to coat that and I think it will be a cool contrast.

Awesome, I cant wait to see pics. I always loved Lian-Li cases, but hated the bare aluminum.
