Spot Meter on 10D/300D?

From everything I've read, the 10D and the 300D don't have "true" spot metering systems. A friend of mine with a 300D is wondering what the best way to jerry-rig a spot meter equivalent with his cam.

Any suggestions?
 
It's really has "partial metering" of 9% (both 10D and 300D), spot metering is usually 1 - 2%, or if you are a OM4Ti user like myself, 0.9%.

Actully none of the EOS digital range hava spot metering, all partial metering. Canon should call things by the correct names.

The 1D MKII has Spot, so does the 1D MKI, so does the 1Ds, the Pro1 does, and the PowerShot S1 IS also has spot. The G5 has it, so does the G3, as well as the S60, S50, A80, S45, all the S series compact cameras, as well as both the SD series.

There are only a couple cameras that don't have it.

I can have spot metering liked to any one of the 45 focusing points on my camera and even link it to more than one.
 
Care on elaborating, Bucket?

Is that ability straight out of the box or the hacked firmware or what?

All of the website reviews that I have seen have said that there is no "true" spot meter on 10D/300D.

But he said that he can do that.

I asked him how.

Bucket has the 1D Mark II and a 10D. 45 pts vs 7 pts for autofocus. 10D does Evaluative, Partial, and center-weighted metering. 300D does evaluative in everything except manual which is center-weighted, right?
 
Buy a hand-held spotmeter. Sekonic makes several nice ones with incident meters built in, too.

I keep seeing this question asked. No the 10D and Rebel don't do spot metering, and it doesn't claim to. The three metering modes for the 10D are evaluative, partial, and center-weighted average.

Can't say I've ever really needed spot metering with my 10D. I normally use evaluative or center-weighted average. I've rarely used the partial metering mode.
 
i think the 9% partial metering should be enough to fit most spot metering needs.

it reads light from a very tiny area of the scene, "usually" 1% or less. it's great when you have to get the correct reading on a subject in difficult lighting conditions, like against a bright sunlight background with lots of moving shadows from trees and stuff. With the spot meter you can read, say, only the light on the subject's face.

Partial metering is similar, except it covers a larger patch of the scene (5-10%), but not as much as center-weighted metering (20% or so).
