Hello I have a workstation 10 VM called Win2k8 Media Server. It has 3 vmdk files:

Win2k8-Media-Server.vmdk -- 20GB, contains guest OS
Win2k8-Media-Server-mediaFiles.vmdk -- 6kb
Win2k8-Media-Server-mediaFiles-s001.vmdk -- 650GB

when I created the "mediaFiles" vmdk i selected the option to split the vmdk into multiple files. However as you can see it only split it once into a 650GB file.

Is there a way to split this vmdk into multiple files, preferably under 2GB in size each.

used the vmware-vdiskmanagement command to create the split disk, however it did the exact same thing as in it created:

Win2k8-Media-Server-mediaFiles.vmdk - a few KB
Win2k8-Media-Server-mediaFiles-s001.vmdk - 650GB

im not sure why its doing this?

I think you can do this using vmkfstools. Don't recall the switch, however. Do a search for that.

No...I should've specified, you can import it into ESXi and use that..

i see. well my whole point of splitting the vmdk file is so I can more effectively move it to ESXi. I tried moving this large 650GB file via Veeam and one little hiccup in my network connection it all goes poop.

having multiple smaller files and then moving them little by little so if my connection drops I can easily contuine

well I managed to get the whole 650GB file copied to my esxi server via veeam so i guess my problem is solved for now...
