Splitting high res screen into two?

Okay, I've got a bit of an "in theory" question here.

Say I had a single high res (1920X1200 or higher) widescreen. Would it be possible to split the screen into two for 2D work, so that programs would take up only half the screen when maximized?

Is that the only reason for why you want it?
To be able to maximize and only get half the size?

I know that it is possible to make such an app (without having to mess with "two" monitors). Ultramon for instance adds two buttons beside the regular ones found in the upper right corner (minimize, maximize and close).

One of them maximizes the windows across both monitors (ultramon is targeted at dual-monitor setups) and if pressed again restores to the size it had before.
The other one just sends the windows to the other screen.

That doesn't help you but that proves that it's possible to make what you want with an (probably) simple app.

That would seem like an better solution. But don't know if an ap like that exists. Should

Edit:
I did found this page though:

Explains alot of ways to do what your asking and theres also a link to some software that will do it for you too.

If you have an Nvidia card you can enable gridlines, it lets you divide your screen into up to 4 sections. Then you just hold down alt while maximizing it will maximize to that sub-section. I can't seem to find the page on their site I was looking at yesterday about it, but I found this one: http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/xfx_geforce_fx_5950_ultra/page3.shtml They seemed to have copied that page I was looking at word for word, so it should have all the necessary information.
