Splinter Cell Help

You hit w, a, s, or d, which works the tumblers. You kind of have to guess at which button it is but you try them all until you get the right buttons.

wasd moves me around, i cant get close enuff to open the damned lock.
.

When you approach a locked door the option to pick it should be in the context menu.

This is the first Splinter Cell, right? IIRC you had to go to your quick inventory and select the lockpick from the gadgets section. I can't remember if you left-click, press space, press shift or press E, but ONE of those actions while facing the door should bring up the lock pick w/ the tumblers interface. That is when you use WASD to search and lock the correct pins by tapping each one.

It's a tad confusing for the PC (I played the game on xbox); I guess that's why in the sequels Ubisoft did away with the seperate lock pick gadget and implemented it in the upper right action menu.

as noted, when you approach a locked door, you get the litlte context menu popup (or maybe you have to hit the spacebar to get it) and you'll see "use lockpick" come up. Choose that, and you'll enter the lockpicking interface.

Use W,A,S,D to move the pick around. once you hear the pick start clicking on, let's say, D, then you want to switch back and forth between that letter and the adjacent two. So if it clicks on D, I want to start switching back and forth between S and D until the tumbler is picked and move on to the next one, repeat.

If you don't get a context menu or anything next to doors, you might want to make sure you are fully patched.

AHA! I dont get that menu, off to search for patches now. Will post back with my progress.

Thanks for all the help!

To be honest, not sure a patch would help you. I've never heard of this bug before.

You could try what the above poster said.... it's been so long since I played the first splinter cell, I can't remember exactly, but can you equip the lock pick like you do your weapons?

If so, then equip it, get close to the door, and see if you can use it on the door that way. I don't think I have my install disk with me, otherwise I'd load it up and try to help you out a bit more, but I'm just going from memory here.

drdeutsch, the little lockpick context menu in the upper righthand corner is available only in the later sequels of Splinter Cell, therefore a patch will not solve protec's problem. In the original, you HAD to select the lock pick as a seperate entity in the gadgets section of the quick inventory then tap any of the buttons/keys as I mentioned in my previous post while facing the door you're trying to unlock. I don't know what the equivalent button on the PC is compared to the right trigger on the xbox, but it is that one that brings up the lockpick w/ tumblers interface.

OK - here's the deal. I can select the lockpick, but when i get close to the door, it doesn't interact. That interaction is what I'm missing.

the only way it should work is that you:

1) press and hold ctrl to bring up the quick inventory

2) look for something that looks like a lockpick and use your mouse to click on it

3) you will have and see the lockpick. if you get to a door that requires a lockpick (not all of them can be picked) walk as close as you can and press mouse1 or fire

if that doesn't work i really don't know what to say
