i plan on adding a different fan to my power supply, and i was wondering if i could just twist the wires together, or do i need to solder them?

If it is inside the PSU then you will be safe to just twist them together. Solder to reduce the risk of the wires seperating. One thing that I am fond of is liquid electrical tape. Think rubber cement but no electrical conductivity.

You can twist them together, but there's a chance of them moving around and becoming disconnected, and you'd probably never notice. And as you can guess, a power supply without a fan isn't the best of ideas...

I'd solder them. It's worth a trip to the store for a cheap soldering iron and a little solder just to be safe. Plus, soldering stuff always has a cool feeling anyway :)

Ask yourself a question:

Do you prize your computer components? Well if you do, you might as well not try to do a mod halfassed in case something goes wrong and the PSU blows up.

Thats because you solder indoors and inhale the nice solder fumes ;)

You could probably get off without solder, but I wouldn't risk it - If you have never soldered before, be VERY careful with the soldering iron (the second or third time I soldered some wires together, i rested the iron on its stand and accidentally bumped it with my arm... Needless to say, it hurt like a mofo)

Solder and heatshrink - always

True, but if it's inside the PSU. Just solder + electrical tape.

I wouldn't just leave them twisted. Soldering only takes 10 seconds.

i changed the fan in my power supply like your planning. i just twisted the ends of the wire, then put those plastic caps on the end. its worked fine so far.

splicing will do the job fine. use some good crimps, or soldier them. make sure you insulate the exposed metal pretty good.

use Merret twist connectors , then it will be easier to remove/replace/clean fans .

wire splicers are good for the job in my opinion. you can find small ones that look nice and do the job
