Splicing 2 fans together?

Question: Is there any reason why I can't/shouldn't splice two fans together to both use the same 3 pin connector and then plug that into my motherboard (or other)?

Also, how does the 3rd pin work for detecting fan speed?

What I'm wondering is that if I have a fan controller, and I want to control two fans from the same power "output", is it ok to splice the fans together pin for pin into the output to control both with the same amount of juice?

Of course, I'm sure to get things to be truly "equal" you would have to use the exact same fans...

But also, if you were to do this, would anything funky happen on the third pin that conveys a speed signal?

It all depends on the maximum energy rating of the output connector of the fan controller. Add up the watts of each fan and if it less than the maximum, you should be fine. Granted there will be some in rush current that may exceed the maximum. but this should only be momentary.

With regard to the speed sensor, only connect one of the fans to reduce signal migration.

Hmmm....well, what if they were to be going into a fan-monitoring device that was pulling it's power from a normal 4pin molex? As opposed to a motherboard connection with a 3pin?...

Would the fan monitor likely be able to handle the brunt of 2 120mm fans on one channel?
 
Probably. Afterall, my 4-fan controller can power four 120mm's at full power, and it only has one molex connection. Shouldn't be a problem.

Just wondering, as the device breaks out the 4-pin 12V molex into X-number of connectors...hmm...any voltage limit on an individual one?....hurm.
