Spending money on PSUs

Is it just me or am I the only one who shells out all my money on power supplies. I see people here who spend $400+ on video cards, yet skimp out on their PSU. I could never spend that much money on a video card. My max is around $200. But when it comes to power supplies, there is no limit. I am willing to pay whatever for the most power efficient, quality built PSU available. The PSU is the heart of the computer. I figure it deserves to be the most expensive component in your PC. What do you think?

Most expensive? Hardly, but it does need to be hardy and reliable. There's no need for a $500 PSU in a $1500 PC when a quality $100-$150 unit will do the job quite nicely.

Spend more if you feel you must but given the choice of spending $500 on a GPU and a PSU I'd go for the $400 vid card and a good $100 PSU. There are several that will do the job quite well. Rather that than spend $300 on a PSU and $200 on a vid card, I tend to use my video cards for a long ass time so the investment is well worth it.

I buy power supplies that will last me a long time, since my demands aren't too high, given that I also tend to keep video cards for a while.

I don't buy cheap stuff, since my current power supply is an Antec Truepower Trio 650, and my video card is a GeForce 7900GS in one system, and a Silverstone Zeus 650 + Radeon x1950GT in another, but at the same time, I'm not one who would spend the money for an 8800GTX + PCPC unit. I am, however, comfortable in knowing that the above units can easily power up a single 8800GTX, or something similar.

The way I figure, if the above mentioned units can power up my system stably, and have a bit of room for future cards, then I've spent my money as wisely as I can. By the time the above power supplies are no longer powerful enough, I figure that the prices on power supplies that are powerful enough, will have dropped to the amount that I have paid for the above mentioned units.

Once I do get a new power supply, I relegate my older ones to simpler builds, or use them to upgrade systems that need them.

This way, spending 100-150 for a power supply every three years, beats spending 500 dollars for a power supply that I'd keep for five years.

Of course, I could end up eating my words, since technology does progress rather rapidly...

I buy nothing but PCP&C PSU's......I'm sure there are others that might be as good or better ...but I have had good luck with these and see no reason to change.

You get what you pay for, but sometimes too much is just too much.
