I just recently switched from an AMD X2 to a Q6600. I was screwing around with the newest version of CPU-Z and noticed the clock speed changing under load. Quick Google found out that Speedstep was doing it's thing.

On the AMD, when I enabled Cool n quiet, it was a disaster. Games would crash, lockups, etc... I just left it off.

So far I haven't had any problems (built this box Tuesday) with SpeedStep. Is there any benefit to shutting it off? What about if I start overclocking?

It depends on what you use your system for. I like saving power since I leave my computer on 24/7 so that it can act as a PVR and server. However I disabled Speedstep on my last Intel rig and Cool&Quiet on my current AMD because of stability issues.

I find that the only way to maintain a stable system while overclocking is to use software to control these power saving modes. I've used Notebook Hardware Control in the past (yes even on desktops) but due to current Vista compatability issues I'm using RMClock now.

RMClock works great and it gives you a higher level of control over Speedstep or C&Q.
