Help?

Sorry, I'm a total amd/homebuilt computer noob. I just bought an AMD x2 3800 with a Gigabyte K8N sli mobo. I tried searching here and elsewhere but to no avail. I am getting 0rpms and a temp of 70c on my #3 fan in speedfan and the Gigabyte utility as well. Actually the Gigabyte utility reports it as 0rpm for the "system fan". When I open up the case all the fans seem to be working (cpu+ the 3 case fans).

Is this something I should be worried about? I haven't had any crashes, but this 70c temp concerns me. The other temps are 25c and 31c so I'm guessing that those temps are fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

What fan is it reporting for? Usually speddfan reports temps for north bridge, south bridge, and processor. If the processor HSF is pluggind into the mobo, you will get a RPM reading for it. If it is into a fan controller or molex power, you will not. Also, if the north and south bridge both use passive cooling instead of active (fan) cooling, you will get a RPM reading of 0 instead of the fan repots being omited.

70*C is a little hot for a north or south bridge, amke sure you've got nothing covering the passive cooling on either, and make sure that you have good airflow in that case. Open it up and take a pic if you can. Chances are, you are blocking critical airflow to one of the bridges. This happened to me once, a little wire management and it was all fixed up.

Thanks for the help. I have no idea which bridge is affected.. All I know is that fan1 is reporting 25c, fan2 is reporting 33c and fan3 is reporting 0rmp and 70c. My hd0 is @34c

I opened the case and the hsf/cpu fan is running as well as the top case fan, the rear casefan and th fan in the bottom that seems to cool the hd. Is it just a missing sensor on my mobo? When it is a "system fan 0rpm" should I worry?

Try putting the commputer under load, and see if the temp changes at all. Run Prime95 to stress test the computer, and let that run for a few hrs and see if its stable. Theoretically, it should be able to run forever since your computer shouldnt be making mistakes ever if its completely stable, but a few hours will do for this purpose.

My guess is that is is just a faulty/unused sensor, and there is nothing to worry about.

My guess is blocked ventilation to a south bridge, or it is his video card temp.

For me, temp 3 is my south bridge. It shows 0 RPM because there is no fan on it, and a temp of 29*C because of good ventilation and good wire management.

That's completely normal for gigabyte 939 boards. The northbridge has a passive heatsink and it sucks. I ran my K8N Ultra-9 with the NB doing 70C for over 6 months without an issue (before I upgraded to a board that was SLI capable).
