Why was the AMD-ATI merger thread closed if Steve linked it to the frontpage to go with one of yesterday's news story?

the mod who closed it left a post with their reason why at the end.

If you have an issue with it you should PM them directly.

I'm just trying to get clarification. Is Speculation wrong on these forums? And since everyone was being civil in the thread, I thought it would be strange for readers of the Homepage to be linked to a dead thread.

Once the merger becomes a fact we will reopen the thread or start a new one...... If it happens and when it happens. The mods have had a directive to close threads on speculation of new hardware, so I think this would qualify under those terms.

what about all the conroe threads?

is it in the forum rules that you cannot post speculation?

Half the threads on all of the forums are based on speculation in one form or another. Thats kinda the whole reason for having an enthusiast forum. To talk about potential upcoming products and developments and speculate on how it will help change and evolve the computer industry. If its not the design of these forums to speculate, then go ahead and close the offending threads. What I can't get is how 15 threads remain open based purely on speculation, yet the 16th gets closed.

I am also a firm believer from a business standpoint, you do not close "self-promoting" threads like this one that was linked from the [H]ard News page. The fronpage promoted talking about this subject and when you get there it is closed for exactly talking about it. It just seems a little off when a business doesn't support itself.

HUGE difference. Conroe and AM2 have been on the roadmap for almost 6 months. The Forbes article was saying "if AMD were to buy ATI, now would be a good time to do it." That's not even specualtion, that's random guessing. Those kinds of threads usually don't last very long.

So if I were to start a thread called, "What if Intel were to buy AMD? Wouldn't it be cool?," the thread would be closed because it's speculation that it might happen? I'm sure I could come up with reasons that it's going to happen also, Intel is bigger, it wants to eliminate competition, blah blah blah. That would be closed? That doesn't really make sense. People would shoot it down anyway (and that's what open exchange of information on a forum is all about right?)

If you post it and the mods think it should be closed, it will be. There is no way I can tell you beforehand what will be closed....that would be conjecture ;)

Its not too often that civil threads with lots of discussion get closed without warrant. It should have been closed by the second post not 4 pages later.

EDIT: What if the thread asked about peoples opinion regarding the possibility? Or are all what if threads not allowed?

Sometime it's not possible fopr a mod to close a thread simply because they are not here, the length is irrelevent. Again I will say that I cannot answer for individual mods in their own forums, so what you post will determine if it is acceptable or not. With that I will close.
