Hello all!

A friend of mine (and fellow [H]er) recently gave me a graphics card that I can't use. (I don't mind, it was free and he didn't know.) It's PCI-E 16x, which is a generation or two newer than anything in my house

The card appears to be a DELL OEM, P/N 109-A26030-01, which according to Google, is a fairly low-spec ATi X600, with 128MB VRAM.

I have another friend, who lives closer to me. He has an ASUS CG5275-AR003 computer, which he is running stock. If I send him the card that I have, and he sticks it in his machine...

(A) will it work at all?
(B) will it be better than whatever the stock graphics are?
(C) how much better (or worse) will it be?

I believe that card would be a waste of time in his machine. His current graphics setup has 256MB of memory

But in answer to question A. Yes, it will work. As for how well,I think worse to much worse.

The X600 would be limited to the legacy driver which has not been updated since 10.2.

Graphics 32MB (shared) Intel GMA HD integrated graphics chip are the specs I get for that model of Asus. Your card may be better than what he has now, but possibly not enough to notice the difference. You can spend a few bucks and get something better.

I believe it should work with Win 7. Nothing I can think of that would cause problems.

Great. I'll tell him what ya'll said, and if he wants it, it's his.

Thanks, all!

One more question that I didn't think of first --

my friend has an HDMI port on his computer. Would he still be able to use that with the new card?

Not if he wants to get the performance of the new card. The HDMI is connected to the integrated graphics, so if he uses it he won't be using the new cards power to push his display.

That's what I was afraid of... I guess there's no way to "bridge" those connections. But that's OK, since he can get a DVI->HDMI adapter if he should ever need one (it's just one of those "good to have" things, ya know?). Besides, I sorta expected that response.

No worries... I think he can still use the card. I'll fab him a regular-height bracket later, since I only got the low-profile bracket with this card.

If the thing has DVI on the card you can just use adapters DVI->HDMI though he wont get sound out of the card.
