Specific Fan Replacements (and I do mean specific)

So I have two iStarUsa 5 drive to 3 bay hot swappable cages and in the back of each is a fan with a hi/low switch control as part of the cage. The fans are too loud and I think I could probably get more efficient fans to replace them. So I checked the size and how it's plugged into the backplane.

It turns out it's an 80x20mm fan (unusual size) and it requires the small three pin header. Not the regular 3 pin header, but one I've never seen before that is super small. It's about 2/3 the size of the normal motherboard 3 pin header.

So I looked on google for 80x20mm fans and found a few, but the problem is they all have molex connectors which does me no good. I suppose I could pry off the small 3 pin connector and put it on the cabling of a new fan, but I'd prefer to find a replacement fan that has everything I need without much issue.

Anyone know what these smaller 3 pin headers are called and where I might be able to find a good (QUIET) replacement fan?
 
Well you say it's a 3pin so I assume the device monitors the fan. I would think this could cause some problems.

A picture might help identify the connector being used but odds are the best solution will be to remove the lead from the stock fan and attach it to the new fan.

If it were me I would probably start by just unplugging the stock fan and see if the device has any reaction. If the device still functions as it should I would pull the stock fan and mount a standard 80mm on the out side. Depending if the device needs the output from the fan or not this could be really easy. You could optionally hack it up to fit an standard 80mm fan. At least with a standard 80mm fan you know you can get a nice one that isn't too loud.

Well the problem is the fan is inside a 20mm deep box within the cage so if I mounted a fan on the outside it would stick out and I'd have to attach it with tape or glue somehow. It just wouldn't look very pretty.

The inside fan uses standard gauge fan wires though but if something happened I would love to have a replacement cable header for obvious reasons.

The ideal solution would just be replacing the fan with something MUCH quieter. We'll see if that's possible or not though...

I'll try to get pics for size comparison later to show what I'm talking about.
 
Is the fan apart of the drive/carrier or cage? If it's the cage will it function not plugged in? If it does why not just put a standard connector on them and undervolt? Also, is the connector on the device or are you talking about on the fan? Such as a 3 pin Panaflo tail? In any case I'm sure they can be found.

As far as fans, what do the ones in there run at? Most 80mm thin fans run at a pretty high RPM. But here are some options.

Evercool 80x15mm 2500rpm.

Delta EFB0812LB 80x15mm 2300rpm

Sanyo Denki San Ace 80x15mm 2000rpm

SilenX IXP-52-14 80x15mm 1800rpm

SilenX IXP-52-11 80x15mm 1600rpm

SilenX is not what I would call my first choice for fans, but in this case are the only ones I have seen under 2000rpm and might be the best choices here for "quiet".

The fan is screwed into the plastic part of back of the cage, while the SATA backplane has the 3 pin connector. The fan plugs into the connector with a 3 pin plug. The plug on the backplane is about 2/3 the size of a normal 3 pin connector.

It is NOT a normal 3 pin plug however. I have several extra normal 3 pin fan tails lying around and it is too big for the female plug on the backplane.

Also, those fans unfortunately won't work as I specifically need a 20mm deep fan :( The screws that screw the fan into the plastic housing are specific enough that I have to get a 20mm fan.

That's the cage, and on the back you can see how I can't exactly mount a 25mm fan in there, and a 15mm fan would also be difficult to mount as the screws would be 5mm too long (I would need a LOT of spacers/washers to get that to work).

Edit: On second thoughts the OTHER end of the panaflo tail might work. I'll have to try that tomorrow. The only problem with that obviously is they don't make panaflo to panaflo female/female connectors anywhere I can think of and I don't have much room for extra wire to float around in there.
 
Ah, I see, so the fan is not held in place by screws but rather a cover? Got those photos of the end? I can't help without seeing them, have you tried looking at digikey or mouser? Not only do they probably carry the connector they also carry many 20mm thick fans.
 
Mouser carries the plugs. If they're what I'm picturing, they're used on VGA quite often and made by Molex. They're called SPOX and available in any configuration you can imagine.
