That is not the main benifit of an SSD. Even with 5400 RPM hard drives one can get 1000 MB/s read.

The real benefit of an SSD is small or random reads and writes. For these an SSD will be 50 times (or even more) as fast as a hard drive (even raid arrays).
 
This depends on your usage pattern. In most desktop applications the read and write pattern are small so there will be a huge benefit with a SSD.
 
I would read a few of the OCZ and Sandforce threads from this forum to understand the technology.
