I've been trying to find a device that will let me plug both my headphones and speakers into my computer simultaneously and let me change which is playing sound at each point in time. I'm looking for an easier method to constantly manually switching between speakers and headphones. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

A Y cable can work. When you are using the speakers you won't hear the headphones anyway and when you want to use your headphones by itself you can turn off the speakers.

Or you can buy an audio switch.

I wouldn't do a Y cable, depending on the headphones you've got, because they present a far more complex load than the line input on the speakers

do you have an audio card that lets you configure what port does what? (a lot of onboard solutions do this), just clone the stereo L/R mix to a few ports

if the speakers have a headphone jack, this may also be an option

Hmm, yes, Y-cables + headphone/speaker combos are best to be avoided. Using software would be the best bet, followed by an audio switch.
