The 'Egg is having a 72 hour sale on these speakers for $129.99, with promo code EMCMNLP33 and free shipping. I don't currently have any sort of setup right now but just bought myself a new HDTV and want something to complete the set.

My questions/requests are:

- Are these speakers good for the price? (I'm not an audiophile)

- I need a receiver to go along with these, looking for one with 2+ HDMI ports, and other basics.

- Also need a Subwoofer to go with them. I don't need something extraordinary, just enough to fill a small room. I need depth with my movies, haha.

Thanks for any help provided!

Here is what I posted in an thread earlier today:

Onkyo 507 is decent with HDMI audio/video switching. Runs around $280s.

Add on these speakers

$179.99 - $50 Off (Code EMCMNLP33) ='s $129.99

and this sub for $99:

and you have a nice sounding 5.1 setup for around $500

Or you can go for a fairly nice HTIB for around $529

Last two links seems to be broken. Whats a HTIB? I'm still learning all my Home Theater lingo, haha.

Edit: Seems to be the dots in the links.

HTIB = Home theater in a box. this would potentially include, dvd player, receiver (possible combo of amp and integrated dvd player) speakers and sub woofer

The problem with the cheaper HTIBs (like the one you linked) and receivers is that they do not pass audio through the HDMI to receiver. You really want this feature. If you don't have HDMI audio pass through then you have to run an optical cable to the receiver and you lose sound quality.

That's true! I never thought of that. My Fathers receiver can't do HDMI audio pass through.

But that 7.1 setup is still a bit overkill, what would be a good 5.1 HTIB?

to the best of my knowledge, optical audio vs hdmi audio quality should be next to nothing. if anything it's just a pain that you have to run 2 cables instead of 1

They're both digital, right? I would still rather have the audio pass through HDMI.

it's true they are both digital.as long as you stick with 5.1 you're not going to net any greater benefit. if you go with 7.1 you would benefit from hdmi over optical

How would my untrained eyes see if a receiver has the audio pass through HDMI in the specs? Would it say it plain out?

Only HDMI supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. If you are planning on buying a blu ray player or a PS3 then you want use HDMI and not optical/coax.

I am not sure of your budget. You want to get a solid receiver though as it is the core of your home theater system. It's your call. You can get something less expensive that fills your current needs or spend a little more a get something that has some room for growth.

The ONKYO HT-S3200 you posted is a well regarded HTIB and produces great sound for the cost but it is limited.

The 6200 or the 507, Energy speakers and the Polk sub combo from the other thread would give you room to grow since the receivers for those options are more robust.

There are a ton of other options out there. Pioneer and Yamaha make some nice lower end receivers too. Check out the forums at avsforum.com. There is a wealth of info and helpful people there.

I've had DTS work through an optical before. But I don't know if it was DTS-HD MA, if there is a difference.

I'm not the type to buy something that is limited. I like doing upgrades, although I don't ever see myself actually doing 7.1, I would like the benefit of having Dolby TrueHD + DTS-HD MA.

Now I just have to get around to deciding if I want a HTPC or a PS3.

It is hard to tell sometimes. On the low end receivers the manufacturers try to disguise the fact the receivers only do video pass through so you have to read between the lines. Any receiver that supports DTS-HD Master, DTS-HD High Resolution, Dolby TrueHD will do audio pass through on the HDMI inputs.

I'll have to remember that. I am enjoying that receiver you sent my way though.

Receiver $280
Speakers $129 after promo code
Sub $99
Total: $552.04 (After S/H + Tax)

I might get the Speakers right now, since they're on sale.

Other option is the 7.1 system which is $573.71 after S/H + Tax.

Decisions....
