I'm looking to move my current speakers off my desk and onto some speaker stands. Does anyone know of any decent and budget priced stands that I can look at? I found a budget brand, Sanus, on Amazon, but some of the complaints regarding its assembly have made me nervous.
 
speaker stands should be a few things
a) sturdy, heavy, and rigid
b) correct height for your application
c) good base and platform for your speakers.

expect to spend around $100 and up, unless you go DIY.

the entry level sanus stands i dont like too much because they use 2 MDF boards to make the pillar. the little pricier ones use a solid MDF pillar which is OK, but are more expensive and i would like to have seen steel at that price.

I made my own for about $35. Nothing fancy, 1" MDF for the base/speaker plates and 2.5"x2.5" pine for the post. Toss in some wood screws and Bam! speaker stands. Already had power saw/drill. Add another $10-20 for paint/stain if you want it.
 
ill improve that a tad, replace sithsolo1's pine pillar with 3" sand filled PVC tube, and get speaker cones or outriggers for the base, and some adhesive rubber discs for the top.

I just made a 5.1 setup with them today lol. I will post some pics in the speaker thread soon. Alert the press! It is a kind of unique looking setup and pretty sweet to game with too. I do believe I have a system that weighs so much it could only be done in the basement. Each "stand" weighs almost 90 lbs and I have 4 of them.

You could also beat a burglar to death with them. Dual purpose.

Many of the suggestions seem to be for the floor. The speaker size also matters. Not enough information provided to give a decent response.

I assumed this was off desk because the OP was looking as Sanus and the shortest stands they make are 16". On my desk that would put the speakers above head height. ;)

Shittay phone pic but you get the idea. Sounds tits with the voices nicely centered with great spatial imaging. Believe it or not folks, it works great.

I apologize for the slow response, I've been away from my comp for the past couple of days.

I'm using 2 x M-Audio BX5A with my comp right now (to be replaced by passives soon), and 2 x Polk Audio Monitor 30 with my receiver (I'd like to get speaker stands for them too).

Uhh, yes, these would be stands for the floor (I've never heard of speaker stands for a desk). My desktop is about 2 feet from the ground. The speakers I'm using are in the post above this one.

is that accurate? over here the almost universal desk height is between 29-31"
 
Go DIY, I'm about halfway through making some stands myself... All the stands I looked at below $100 were shitty or ugly. Halfway through staining

solid red oak which is quite heavy, pillar is 3"x3"x30" - wood was about $45, stain was $5, speaker spikes were I think $15, going to get some tung oil which is another $15, so the cost adds up to what you can get at Best Buy but you can get them exactly how you want.
