Speaker set up?

Hi everyone,

I have little knowledge in the area outside of headphones so any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. I usually use my headphones for audio, but sometimes I want to use my speakers to watch a tv show on my computer when my living room is otherwise occupied.

As the room my computer in is also pulling duty as the guest room I don't know if there is enough room to use a speaker system like some Swans MKII's.

I was instead of thinking about going with one of these options instead:

Swans M10s

Swan D1010 IV

Or alternatively, I could cobble together something like:

Lepai LP-2020A+

I would have paired it with some Dayton B652's. But as far as I can tell, other purchasers have stated that Dayton switched manufacturers and the quality of the speakers has dropped significantly. So any alternatives would be appreciated.

*Also, should I just spend a bit more and switch the Lepai with a proper Stereo|A/V Receiver?

Thanks

hi... yes the dayton b652 speakers have been f***ed over by the manufacturing change...

of what you have listed i would prefer in order of preference

t-amp (not necessarily that lepai i personally don't think the build quality is that great)

I have a SMSL SA-S3 which i can recommend without hesitation (very nice) and also the Topping TP20 MKII is quite good.

+ bookshelf speakers (i think looking for used speakers can be well worth the effort my monitors are currently flanked by a very nice set of JBL L1 bookshelf speakers i paid $40 for used (cost new $800~ish)

however used can be a hassle to run down / requires luck & patience if you lack said luck or patience

then the Polk Monitor series are very good value speakers

I'm a fan of these: MORDAUNT SHORT Carnival 1

http://www.accessories4less.com/index.php?page=item&id=MORDCARN1CAL&gclid=CLGEwJWi5bcCFZFcQgodljsAPQ

alternately if you have space issues if you find local better (likely cheaper) I have 4 sets of these type of speakers Haven't paid more than $15 for any pair of them ... Realistic Minimus 7 /77 series speakers (optimus pro also similar)

these sell around $50~ or so on ebay ... very nice sounding little speakers.

of the other choices honestly I'd pass on the m10s

the D1010 would be ok... but what i don't like about powered speakers if one thing goes (woofer or amp..tweeter ..etc... ) you can either fix them or start over from scratch where if you blow a speaker you can locate new speakers and still use your amp...or if you amp blows (assuming it don't take the speakers with it on it's way out.) you can get a new amp and be on your way.

oh and if you are space constrained i kinda hate saying it but these might be worth a listen

i know i know... i'm not any happier about them being bose than anyone else.. but i gave them a listen..and see my posts i have a metric F*** ton of vintage stereo gear these are not bad little pc speakers and are a very friendly size for those with space limitations

and oh right one more speaker to consider for a t-amp based solution micca motion MB42

http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A

these have been getting a lot of positive buzz and are rather compact and cheap @ $50~

The Minimus 7's are familiar. I used to have a pair of those, but I have no idea where they went. I would probably have to buy them over ebay as I never see them on craigslist in my area, only a few JBL's that are way overpriced.

The Mordaunt Short's seem interesting. Would you suggest them over the Minimus 7's?

I listen to a lot of classical and jazz music but sometimes I do like to play some Rock/Rap and watch action oriented films/TV. That's why I was thinking I would need a subwoofer as I doubt the Carnival's have enough bass on their own. It's also why I became interested in the Swan M10's/D1010's.

So how much would a decent sub run?

i'd say yeah the carnival 1's over the minimus 7's (the 77s have bigger woofers and more base..but they had foam surrounds so they likely will need refoamed if it hasn't already been done.. my 77s needed refoamed but it cost $5 for the kit so i was into them a grand total of $15.) the 77s have more base

but especially for rap you are likely going to want to add a sub

accessories for less has the matching carnival 9 subwoofer for $150~

http://www.accessories4less.com/mak...val-9-10-100w-Powered-Subwoofer-Cherry/1.html

It would be pretty decent and match the speakers if you care about that kinda thing... might be killer to get two of those actually and run one left and one right actually...

but u might try it... near field (at your pc desk) you may find you have enough low end w/ out a sub???

w/ my JBL l1s at my pc desk I don't feel I need a sub personally but I do have a polk sub here anyways.

other popular sub options Dayton ($100~is over at PE) and of course the Polk PSW 505 (which is a better deal when on sale it isn't right now)

there is this PSW110 as well
http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-10...=UTF8&qid=1371349275&sr=1-3&keywords=polk+psw

I have a PSW10 which many rip on... but it is a solid little guy (imho) at $89~ or so frequently.

Hey, thanks for the help.

I'm going to pick up a pair of the Mordaunt Shorts. Though, does Mordaunt make a black set of those speakers? Looking at the pictures, the wood color seems to be a bit too light for the room it's going into. Usually I wouldn't mind, but the room's main function is technically a guest room and every other furniture piece is either dark wood or black.

Another question. Those amps you listed look nice, but is there a version/ similar amp that also has a headphone jack?

Finally, what type of connectors would I need? Just some speaker wire, or would I need some additional types?

thanks!
