My dad donated me a pair of infinity SL bookshelf speakers, but when I plugged them in the surrounds Disintegrated. He was storing them in a hot shed for a couple years.

Anyplace I can pickup some re-foam kits cheap? I think they are 5.25" or 4" (I will measure) parts express does not seem to sell a kit for them?

I'd buy new speakers but I am broke for now.

I wonder if it would just be worth slapping something like this in them to make the speakers functional again.

They are in nice oak cabinets, but certainly nothing high end. Or maybe even something like this, although I'm not sure it is correct. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=295-360

The first looks more similar to what is in there now, and my receiver does support 4 ohms (not sure what the tweeter that is in the box is rated for though).
 
Crossovers are very particular about what speakers they are used with, chances are those parts express woofers and tweeters would not mate correctly with the crossover in those speakers.

Whats likely to happen? the woofer or tweeter or crossover blowing up.

To play it safe you should replace the crossover with a correct one.

Have you checked ebay or google for the right refoaming kits yet?
 
you can often find replacement speakers from PA to match your OEM speakers without having to replace the crossovers too. find the model number and ask for some help over in the DIY section of AVSforums or the place Crim linked too.
 
For the cost of fixing, it seems like I should just save up and buy one of their tower kits, and assemble it myself....

LOL...no idea how I did that. work was getting to me yesterday. I am going to say I must have thought it was Crim since you left out something I wouldn't have expected the great SJetski71 to skip. that sound better? Now I have to figure out what to say to Crim when he sees this...


to the OP...yeah, speaker repair on lower end stuff isn't really worth it usually. It can be as a "look what I did" type of thing, but so can building a speaker form a kit.
 
Step one... don't use speakers with foam surrounds :-p

Seriously though, replacing drivers with different alternative drivers takes careful planning and execution. You have to consider the crossover as well as the design of the enclosure.

Haha, flattery will get you everywhere, and Crim knows us well enough where we'll get a pass with him :). The OP does have sort of a diy speaker project on his hands, not necessarily bad thing as he'll learn a few new things probably.

And to add to what i said before OP, worst case scenario is you blow a speaker or something, but it's more likely that it just won't sound right, muffled mid tones, peaky highs, muddy bass. Or you might get the specs close enough where it'll sound decent. An easy choice would be to drop the tweeter altogether and go with full range speakers/woofers. If you want more info on full rangers, let me know and i'll dig up some related links and examples.

And don't forget that there are speaker liquidation bargains floating around. For just a little more than the cost of parts you can probably pick up a new set of decent close-out speakers.

Curious to hear how it turns out, let us know if you can.

Yea thats the ones, I agree the boxes are nice, but I don't want to collect junk either cause I have enough future projects :p

Would something like this work? Is it hard to do?

you need 6 1/2" foam.

Search ebay titles and descriptions for "infinity speaker foam" and you'll find what you're looking for.

I'm not sure how good your speakers were when they worked, but it's probably worth it.
I refoamed my Infinity Reference 1's for $6 - surrounds + $3 for some better glue. But it was laborious...
Oh, and I bought generic foam surrounds off ebay, they were just as thin as the originals.
