I'm currently looking for a decent set of 2.1 (or 5.1) speakers for my computer to replace my Logitec Z-340's. I've shopped on newegg a bit, but I havent been able to find anything that would really fit what I need. Most of my computer-audio is for music, few games here and there, but not much. My Z-340's sound decent enough for music, although on the higher-notes with the volume up there is noticeable distrotion and the sub really lack's "thump" if you know what I mean. My friend has recommended Altec ATP-3's, and I am almost inclined to get them as the set that he has is absolutely incredible for a $50 set of speakers. Is there anything else you guys would recommend for speakers? Budget would probably be less than $150.
 
If you're willing to spend all $150, you probably can't go wrong/will be quite happy with the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's.
 
I think there is a guy selling a brand new Klipsch Promedia 4.1 set for $160. That is the best deal you will be able to find on quality like that. You'll have all the "thump" you can handle.
 
The Promedia 4.1's for $160 is a great buy!

Go with that if you can afford it.
 
I would get those 4.1's even if it meant you only connected two of the speakers; the 4.1 sub is better than the 2.1

They have that "thump" that you were talking about, THATS FO' SHO' !!!!

I have owned the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1's

I have owned the Cambridge 250HD THX Certified blah blah blah

I own the Logitech Z2200 2.1's

The logitechs are the best and the Klipsch are a close second.
 
I have the PM 2.1's and am NOT 100% happy with them. Mine crackle like hell whenever I change the volume. I know other people have had this problem. I''ve tried to fix it with no luck. The produce excellent sound, but that loud crackle is awful. I'm looking to replace them when I get a chance.

The fix is a simple one. Slide the control pod off the back of the satellite, open it up, and spray a small amount of WD40 or silicone spray lubricant into the pot, twisting it back and forth to work it in. The pot's resistance should become really smooth and consistent. If not, repeat until it does. Wipe off excess, and wait a while for any overspray to dry before plugging it back in. Hiss will have vanished.
 
thanks for that tip. I have tried to pull the pod off before, but it wouldn't budge. I will try again
 
NEVER EVER SPRAY WD40 IN A POT!
All you have to do is rotate the pot back and forth across it's entire range to "clean" it.
If that does not help then it needs to be replaced.
Using a lubricant that evaporates (like wd40) will only makes the problem worse because it removes the wiper lubricant.
 
ok, thanks for that tip! Maybe I'll just throw them out and buy the Ultra 5.1's

Yeah.. A while back I had recommended the twisting with the WD40 on backup if the twisting didnt help. I have a tendency to thing the crackling is due to lack of lubrication. know a long time ago that some people on the Klipsch forums would use the WD40 and I think it lasts a lot longer than just the turning. I just do the turning cause I have nothing better to do.. Use WD40 at your own risk.

Go to Radio Shack and buy a can of "Tuner Cleaner" Works great, cleans the duts out of pots like that in a flash.
 
Simplest solution: stop using the control pod to change volume and adjust the computer volume through windows instead.

Spraying wd40 into your control pod!?! All these smarties and not one person came up with the easiest fix :D

Into the pot, not wantonly over the control pod - duh :rolleyes:

It works, speaking from firsthand experience, and not to the the detriment of my PM 4.1's pot after two years and counting. There's a thread on this in the Klipsch forum archives. Everyone who tried it got results.
 
Ok, considering I have owned Klipsch speakers for 4 years I know exactly what you mean when you say spraying wd40 into the control pod, thanx :rolleyes:

It's not that it wouldn't work, it's just that there is an easier way you all managed to overlook.
 
please tell me exactly how to take that damn pod off. I've tried before, but can't do it. I pulled pretty hard on it, but didn't want to break it.
 
To take it off you must remove the stand first, then wiggle the pod back and forth while firmly pulling backwards. Take your time and don't try to force it and you should be fine.
