What would be a good setup (cheap) to replace the Logitech Z5300 speakers (The components )and how would I use the sub with a receiver so can keep the sub as I like it

eh, for $250, you won't see 5.1 or similar, unless you just get the Z-5500 (which is probably an upgrade, but I don't know how much of an upgrade), although you can get a decent pair of stereo speakers (which would be better for music) like AV40's or something

Aren't AV40s actively powered? If they are - you can't really use them in 5.1 from a receiver unless you have pre-outs.

I'm pretty sure the only way to use the sub from those is to remove the built in amp on the back of it and put in passive hook ups for it. Might be more of a pain in the ass that you are wanting.

I have a friend that was in the same position - he opted to just buy some better speakers (polk monitor 30s) for the FR and FL. The 5300s don't play well with anything other than the built in amp on the sub so you are kind of boned - at least if you are wanting to get 5.1 and keep it under 250.

The other option is z5500 which are a considerable upgrade from the 5300s and at least offer the ability to use the speakers later on with a standard receiver.

the AV40's have a subwoofer option from M-Audio

you could also go straight 5.1 from the soundcard, it has preoouts

eh then i guess I'll just have to replace everything. Can you guys recommend some good speakers and a price effective sub

Do you already have a 5.1 receiver? If not then that'll eat up half of your initial $250 budget.

If you already have a 5.1 receiver then you can pickup this popular set, or one of the Dayton 5.1 setups. (the first link has the better speakers, the second link may have better subwoofers, it's a tradeoff).

If you don't have a 5.1 receiver then you could check out something like this. That is their least expensive set that comes with a powered subwoofer. (the black set is sold out)
