Some Background Information:
I'm a university student, who doesn't have that tight of a budget but would like to fix a few things with my computer As poor as I am, my computer is my entertainment center, my primary use is for school, but it's also for gaming (primarily WC3 and CS), my audio system and television. If applicable, I would be willing to spend up to $150 CDN to fix the problem.
Computer Specs:
Anthlon 64 3000+ 754
MSI K8N Neo mobo
1 gig of DDR400 OCZ ram
ATI 9600XT A-I-W
and currently using onboard sound
Speakers are Logitech X-620 6.1
The Problem
I have a hissing problem with my speakers, at around 30% volume level there's silence, and about 45% volume level there's a slight hissing if the room was dead silent, and around 50% it's quite audible. At any volume above 60% or so there's crackling and just poor sound quality.
Personally speaking, doing your average office applications and meddling about, I only need a volume of about 25%. But when I'm listening to music (rock, pop/rock ie Stars, Broken Social Scene, Metric, Hot Hot Heat, Strokes, Vines etc etc.. I like it loud at around 50%+ and if there's a party going on it has to be REALLY loud, as in 70-80% maximum volume. However, at that point in time, the sound quality is horrendous, so I try to never go to that range.
I've found the primary source of the hissing problem to be from my A-I-W card. As for TV viewing there is a line-in from the video card to your speaker to produce sound from the cable(coaxial) signal. Removing the cable, or muting that channel drastically reduces the "hissing". However, once past about 60% the hissing is audible again.
The Question:
So my question is: Would buying a new sound card ie Creative Audigy 2 ZS improve my sound quality and reduce the hissing? I'm not a hardcore audiophile, but I do appreciate quality sound, so I was wondering if anyone had any advice or solutions to my problem.
Furthermore, it's really a hassle for me to mute line-in every time I want to listen to music, and unmute it everytime I want to watch TV, I was wondering if there's any way to script it so it would do it automatically after opening certain applications?
