Hello i need help with a decision for a new set of speakers, im looking for the best possible speakers for under 200 but will go above 200 but not by much... ive been looking at

AudioEngine a2 (2.0)
M-audio Studiophile AV40 (2.0)
Klipsch Promedia (2.1)
Swan D1080MkII (2.0)
Swan M10 (2.1)
Swan M200MkII (2.0) audio-insider sells for $230 but dont really want to spend that much...

if you guys could help me out with this, not really looking for logitech's z-2300 because i hear they lack in some places and have a really muddy bass
I game "alot" (NFS,BORDERLANDS,QUAKE...) but sometimes use headphones (fatal1ty's) I listen to mostly heavy rock/metal (vai, yngwie, buckethead,MAB) and sometimes listen to rap/techno...
i know that a 2.1 setup would be good for games and that type of music but if i end up getting some 2.0 i can always get a subwoofer in the future...
some people recommend that i buy a 5.1 speaker set for gaming
but i dont really have the room for that and i cant find any that are good for music.. im really interested in studiomonitors though

help me out please

As much as I'd like to recommend the A2's I cannot give them a full recommendation whilst knowing how much of a difference the S8 sub provides especially with heavy rock/metal which is all that I listen to. But then again if you haven't heard what a difference a proper sub makes I think you'd honestly be happy with your purchase.

thanks for your reply, yah i read alot of reviews on that speaker and it wont matter about the sub becuase i will probably end up buying a seperate sub...

but i think i might end up buying the m-audio av40's unless some1 can prove me wrong between the 2,

oh btw does any1 know where they sell audioengines becuase ive only found them online and i went to bestbuy and looked around but didnt find any... i think ill check guitar center

My only reservation with the 2.0 choices is that they really won't hit those low frequencies that you are going to want for the kind of music you listed. If you are ok with that for awhile and then get a sub, that should work. However just realize that your setup is going to be kinda anemic on the bass. While the Klipsch aren't as high quality over all, they'll give you more bass.

Of course a good sub added on to the M-Audios will give you even more bass than the Klipsch speakers.

I suppose it really comes down to if you want to buy it and be done or plan on upgrading. If $200 is really all you'd like to spend, get the Klipsch speakers. They are not at all bad speakers and it'll give you a satisfying amount of bass. If you are willing to spend more like $400 total, then go ahead and get the M-Audio or Audioengine speakers, and get a sub in the $200 range later.

As for gaming, ya I'm a huge 5.1 fan. The problem is, of course, the more speakers you want the less money that can be spent on each speaker. So you need to up your budget or lower your quality requirements. For that, I'd recommend looking at the Logitech Z-5500. A lot of audio types like to hate on Logitech and no, their stuff isn't high end but those ones are good for the money. However, they are $350 which significantly blows your budget. However it will get you pretty good 5.1 sound with some heavy bass.

For non-computer speaker 5.1 sound you need to look at a receiver and home theater speakers. However for that again you'll need a bigger budget. You don't want to cheap out badly on a receiver since it will be the core of the system. You'd want to spend at least $200-300 just on it, then you'd still need speakers and a sub.

ill probably plan on getting 1 later
thing is im only 15 :] so i dont really have the money but i am working around the house everyweek for some...
well like the music i listen to doesnt have that much bass unless im breaking out some hard rap/techno, even tho i love the explosions in my games but mostly use my creative headset for that...
i will most likely end up buying the M-audio AV40 with a seperate sub (probably going to be around 270-300) since i will hopefully be reciving money around christmas..
i dont really need top of the line gear but some nice monitors for music... im not sure if they sell the klipsch promedia 2.1's at best buy because i will probably be ending up buying it there

heres what i will buy

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+...ofer/8417527.p?id=1213047115936&skuId=8417527

i think this is a pretty good setup my room is only like 10x12 so it will fill in pretty good
if you guys could recommend me with something else if better but not like really expensive things
thanks

If you have the space, I would skip 'computer speakers' altogether. Computer speakers all seem to have tiny 2-4" drivers in tiny enclosures, powered by wimpy amplifier units. Sometimes accompanied by a fart-box of a sub.

For $200, you can easily beat all of your options listed above with some snooping around. Look on craigslist for a used amp and speakers. Or, Newegg has Polk Monitor 40s on sale for $130. Pair them up with a craigslist receiver, and add a sub sometime down the lien. There are deals all over the place.

Well the major problem there is that the Polk speakers are passive. You'd have to get an amplifier or reciever to drive them with. That is doable, but costs money of course.

If you do go that route, I'd personally recommend the SVS SBS-01 speakers instead. Better value for the money IMO at least if you are going to use a sub (the SBS speakers are sealed which means they have less bass).

thanks sycraft for the reply...
lol man this is to confusing im sticking with the
M-Audio Av40's + a good sub later on

thanks guys
btw is there anywhere i can get really cheap(but good) speaker stands
probably around like 6" tall?

thanks

So, how do you plan on connecting a sub later down the line?

I will also add that, never having heard the M-Audios, they probably won't sound good. You can't cheat physics - a 4" woofer in a small cabinet won't sound very dynamic or full.

i will connect the sub with an RCA jack straight into my MOBO... it has 5.1/7.1 onboard
well m-audios are a quality brand and i have read reviews that say they produce VERY good sounds in highs/mids/lows but not so much lows because there isnt much of a sub... and there better than some shitty logitechs... (i think logitechs are just loud... they just dont produce good sound quality, there pretty much ment for gaming...)

but im sticking with my m-audio av40's so thanks guys for the help and replies

I just picked up a set of Klipsch Promedia 2.1's yesterday at Best Buy on sale for $120.

WAT!! i went to best buy and couldnt find them anywhere :[

i was thinking about getting those to or the AV40's

i just got my m-audio 40av tonight from amazon they sound fantastic
i was trying to decide between the bx5a deluxes and 40av
the 40 av's were 123 shipped over night and the bx5a were $199 at guitar center
the 40av are plenty loud for me i think the bx5a would have been over kill.
I was just looking for something to produce more details from my music and the 40av do this fabulously. I can't believe a 4" woofer can sound like this. They are bassy enough for me
i really don't want a sub i live on the 2nd floor. I think these are the best pc speakers for the price range. I have these sitting on some mopads from aurelex there about 2 inches thick and angle them up to my face as they sit on my desk. I also used some better wire audioquest 14guage from my home theater. I dunno if they makes any difference.

theses speakers need to be about ear level i think to get the mose out of them. So you may have to get lil stands for them or just get some mopads

hey thanks for the reply
ya alot of people say there fantastic
do you think you can review them and test out some songs in like a video review
then send it to me??
becuase theres really no where to get a understanding of how the sound
i wont get the full quality of the speakers but ill get a little taste
and if you could put them at max level to see how loud they get

thanks!

The limiting factor of him recording it would be the microphone/your speakers/headphones. I'm going to say there is no point. Max level? There's no point to that as well, they'll get plenty loud. If you have a Guitar Center around, they should have some active monitor's around.

well they had them at bestbuy setup to a paino and it sounded great n all but i really wanted to listen to music on them so yea ill go to the nearest GC..
thanks guys

Take your own MP3 player and ask the Best Buy staff to hook up the speakers to your MP3 player. They'll help you out.

i was in the same position your in I was very skeptical of the M audio 40AV

I watched all the youtube reviews but you cannot really hear what they sound like until you have a set in front of you playing music. I still have yet the chance to crank these yet
i have tested them out on l4d2 and some mp3s they sounded really good

but i have only used like 25% of the volume they can get really loud fast
the bass is good but its not like a subwoofer but its there. I don't use the bass boost
i don't find it necessary. anyways i would test these out and if you don't like them return em

thanks for the replies guys
yea im gunna stick with the AV40's i was going to spend about 300 bux on speakers,receiver... i mean i know ill get very good quality sound but its not like im recording anyways... even tho i record on my guitar

ill get the av40's with a subwoofer later on down the road

make sure you have your speakers high enough so the tweeters are ear level this will make a huge difference. There is a booklet that comes with them that shows you how to properly setup your 40AV's. It goes into good detail and explains everything. Its pretty awesome that they included something liket that with their speakers. i had a spare set of mo pads that mine sit on and it brings them up to ear level. It also cuts down on un wanted vibrations.

nice im thinking about builing and shelf so that its pretty eqaul with my ears
i think some1 posted it in the forum but i forget where i got it but its a great idea
looks like this
