I have an asus K8V SE motherboard with SPDIF out on it. I would like to hook this up to me home theatre system so that I can listen to music etc. My question is, does it output all system sounds or only certain ones? Is there a way to control what gets outputted to SPDIF?

Also, for audio cables to use, is there much difference between the fibre optics ones and coaxial ones?
 
Off the top of my head, im not sure what software came with your asus motherboard, but in general system sounds will get passed though the SPDIF digital to your receiver. If you want to prevent this, you can either turn off the windows system sounds, or mute the "wave" volume in the windows volume control panel thing. However, if you mute wave, most music players and games will also be mutted.
Programs like Foobar2000 offer special output settings that skip the windows wave thing, so you can play music with the wave muted.
Foobar2000 is a rare execption though, as most games and DVD software that I am aware of do now allow for this.

Opps, forgot to comment on the other part of your post.

To be honest with you, you could start World War 3 over that question. For all general purposes, they are both fine.

Use whatever is most convenient. I run coax between sound-cards and optical to my receiver. :shrug:
