I've always kept my change, dumping it into a jar,etc at the end of every day... Last night after I got back from a long weekend away from home, I realized that I had quite a bit of change weighing down my shelf... I started saving my 40oz JIF peanut butter jars from work specifically to hold change... One jar for quarters, one for dimes,etc,etc,etc... Last night I saw that the penny jar was almost full, and the quarter jar is not far behind... My girlfriend and I guessed/joked about how much money was in the jars... and I said I could probably build another boxen or two out of it all, and she asked why I hadn't done it already... And with that, "Spare Change Boxen" is born... Here in the next week or so, I'll cash it all out and see what it totals up to... May end up with another AXP or two folding for the [H]orde!

Anyone else have any spare change they can scrounge around for and build another boxen for the [H]orde?

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

This has to be the silliest thing I have ever seen.

;)

Kidding.

If i had spare change ("IF") it would go to more boxen for sure :D

I can't save my change long enough to buy a whole boxen.... I generally buy a part here or a part there to keep my farm running.

I used to do something similar to this, but my wife caught on and then the change started turning into otherwise unauthorized purchases not of my own doing. And change is now so passe, gimme the debit card any day of the week.

All in all however, a great idea, and a worthy pursuit of all that loose change!

I would do the same but it seems my change disappears long before it manages to make it into a jar.

I just pulled over 50 bucks in change out of my old car...that's a good start toward a boxen (or an engagement ring) I suppose.

man just the change on my floor i could almost buy a dual opteron system ;) lol ok maybe not quite but at least a sempron system

You really don't want to get married!! :D

Start at about $800.00 and she MIGHT think about it.

I said a start, by no means even close...the one I was looking at was actually right around 2800 bucks...which puts it a little far off for me, being still in college and all. I'm willing to wait it out though, I'm in no rush to get married, though I am positive I've found the girl.

One Pringles Chip can full of dimes, one nickels, two cans quarters, 4 pennies. Bout $250. That change do add up for sure ;)

Consider a lesser rock, and do something useful with the left over money you would have thrown away on a large diamond. If she's insistent on the large rock, she's a money-grubber, or has other major issues. As long as it's a decent diamond, there should be no problems...

Better to have the extra $1000-1500 to spend on groceries/bills than sitting there on her finger. Most newly-weds have real money problems, from what I gather, and it's an additional strain the marriage doesn't need. Trust me.

Those are real good ideas, or alternatively you do something like we did for my wife. We had an incredibly cheap set, but then a few years ago she talked to some of her relatives and a few were wanting to give her the stones out of old rings.

She ended up with a 30 year old diamond from a Sears wedding set, and it alone appraised for almost $2 grand, and it was free. :D

Or you could do like I did.
I bought a new 14K gold setting - ring without the rock - for $125.00
Then I shopped around the pawn shops until I found a ring with a stone I liked. Marquis cut, exceptionally clear, weighs in at .4 carats. Dickered the Pawn Shop down to $400.00 bucks for that ring and they put the diamond in my setting for free.
I came out with a ring that would retail for $1200-1800 depending on where you looked for it.
Total invested $525.00 and my wife loves it and thinks that I'm a financial genius! :D

Remember, that a lot of engagement rings end up in the pawn shops, and that the average markup for jewelry is 300% - 400%.
Let some other poor bastard take that inital loss.
Kinda like buying a used Lexus or Mercedes.

my girlfriend (soon to be fiancee) says "I'd rather have a house than a ring, I'm fine with this $8 one I found at Walmart..."

Yup, she's perfect lol

So this is totally off the original topic, but I have to throw my story in, too. While my (now) wife and I were dating, I went to visit her and her family between semesters. On the way back, we stopped at Walmart and picked up one of the previously-mentioned $8 cubic zirconium rings. We were NOT yet engaged, although we had talked about marriage. So she started going around to our friends, showing the ring, getting the reaction, and then saying "Just kidding!" She got a LOT of great reactions.

Oh, and a month later I got her a real ring and proposed.

And yes, marriage is DEFINITELY worth it. Even if I could have built several (cheap) folding boxen for the money I spent on that ring. And a whole bunch more boxen for the cost of having a kid. And a second car so she's not stranded at home while I'm at work.

Anyway, back on topic. Saving change is a great idea...except I'm so cheap, I use the change when buying anything with cash.

Yup... my whole family thought said "cheapy" was real... her mom was the only one that knew it wasn't... She'll be getting a real ring someday soon, we just have to find the real one... which will probably be exactly like the $8 one, only real...

I need more boxen... I'm having my dad take the change to the bank tomorrow (he works there), I'll let you guys know what the grand total is

A valid point, and one she'd readily agree with. I want to get her a stunning ring though...my choice. I found one that I know she'd love, and I've considered buying just the setting and then a smaller rock and having it put in, which would be just as good an option, however, the main key I have - I want her to be happy. I don't mean that in an "I'm whipped and desperate" way, but more of an "I love her with every fiber of my being" way.

After college, it will be rough, what with loans and everything else to pay off (added to the fact we're both going to be teachers - not traditionally the highest-paying of jobs), but we'll see how the chips fall, yes?

Find a friend/family member that works in a jewelry store and get them to buy the ring at their employee discount (or get a part time job there as your a student). The ring I got my wife with my sisters employee discount appraised at approx $5K but I paid $1.4K :)

Oh, and have them borg the stores cash registers.
