SP35P2(2007) - Down for the count?

I've had this little toaster for my wife since 2007, stuffed with an E6850, 8800GT and 2gb of OCZ ram.

Its been turned off for about a year, my wife stopped using it regularly while she was pregnant.Old box went off it's rocker the other night, all kinds of fun blue screens, though I dont have the stop errors or anything handy, appeared to be memory related. However, the memory from my main rig doesn't work for long in there either. Tested the OCZ ram on my IP35 Pro and it had zero errors in 2 passes. Gives me grief in all 4 slots of the SP35P2, whichever memory I try. Flashed to the latest BIOS just to make sure that base was covered. So it sounds like the board is having some sort of minor hemorrhage and I'm SOL.

Thoughts?

Basically looking for a death certificate, but secretly hoping for other options.
 
A lot of weirdo errors can be due to a faulty power supply. Especially something that's more than a few years old that hasn't been powered up in a while.

I know it's probably a custom Shuttle PSU in there, but if you can find a way to hook up a spare, it might be worth testing.
 
You know, I had an older Shuttle before this one that had a power supply problem... Could be....

Christ almighty, cheapest I can find one is $100 from a sketchy outfit... Or used with uncertain mileage.

I'll see if the connectors are proprietary and daisy a backup in there, and then make the call....

Finagled one in there, same problems. I think the board is just toast :(
 
Old Shuttle SFF motherboard? Check the capacitors.
 
How does one check capacitors? I mean, they're all attached and none are oozing that I can tell...
 
the aluminum tops will bulge or the rubber stoppers on the bottom will start to push out...look closely
 
I will, but let me ask the next question, can someone with zero solder skills replace these little buggers if they are bad?
 
Hate to say it, but maybe not.

I solder every day, have a widefield microscope on the bench, and I find MOBOs to be a bitch, multi layer, lead free, ughh. I really want one of those hot air reflow setups.

On the other hand, the board is worthless now right? Nothing to lose.

Seemed to only be a major problem on the really old Shuttles (like the SV25). Can't say I've seen it on any of the newer ones, though it never hurts to check I guess. Just watching the voltages in the BIOS can sometimes show the problem as well, start to get some really out of spec readings after it is powered up for awhile.

I wonder what the CPU temps are showing? Some thermal grease can dry out, so it could be something as simple as overheating which can manifest as memory errors and BSODs.

Also, what version of memtest? 4.20 from memtest.org should rule out any compatibility issues that memtest tends to have with some chipsets.
