i downloaded SP1 off microsofts website because when i search for updates in control panel it doesnt show up. So when i start to install it, on the first screen where it says "your computer might restart several times" it gets almost done and i get this error thats like an internal error number something and it gives me a reference site and the site does not help.

It might be installed already im not sure. Last night i had to install 40 updates.

the error code is:
0x80070002

CAUSE
This problem occurs because of one or more of the following causes.

Cause 1

You are already running Windows Vista SP1.

Cause 2

Windows Vista SP1 has not been released for the language of the language pack that you have installed.

Cause 3

Windows Service Pack Blocker Tool is used to block the delivery of Windows Vista SP1 from Automatic Updates or from Windows Update.

Cause 4

You tried to install Windows Vista SP1, and the installation failed with a known inconsistency in the file or registry structure.

Cause 5

A hardware device driver or device software was problematic when you updated to Windows Vista SP1.

The Windows Update service can detect the small set of device drivers and software that falls into this category. The Windows Update service will not offer Windows Vista SP1 until an update for the hardware device driver or the device software has been installed.

Cause 6

You have installed a prerelease version of Windows Vista SP1, and you must uninstall the prerelease version, or start with a new installation of Windows Vista.

Cause 7

You used the third-party program vLite to configure the system, and you may have removed required system components that have to be available for Windows Vista SP1 to be installed.

In some cases, these device drivers are problematic on Windows Vista-based computers when you update to Windows Vista SP1. By installing updated device drivers, you will resolve the issue and enable Windows Update to offer Windows Vista SP1.

I am getting the same error. I followed EVERY time consuming procedure on the the Microsoft support pages. Have all the latest drives, and even removed my x-fi drivers just in-case they were conflicting and I am still getting the error. This is ridiculous Microsoft.

I think your issues are most likely drivers... That seems to be the #1 reason of why SP1 isn't offered or won't install correctly.

What kind of hardware do you have? Microsoft does have a list of stuff that isn't working with SP1 yet (And estimated time on those is later on in April).

am i ever going to be able to update windows in this lifetime? when is microsoft going to fix this?

is any of you guys having the same problems?

Yeah most likely this.

So what happens when you remove your drivers and make sure everything else has been done according do every MS support page and you still get the error.

I really do not have time with school cracking down in the last 5 weeks of the semester to do another clean install.

Wait until some driver fixes that come out making it more compatible is about the only thing you could do.

There is a MS page out there outlining all the drivers that won't work with SP1.
