does sp/dif audio work in linux?

im using an MSI nforce3 board, using the coxial audio connection (to connect to a stereo receiver), and i sure cant figure out how or if it works. im using the 0292 nforce driver, i edited the etc/modprobe.d/sound config file, but i still get no audio.

ive heard about using a driver called ALSA, but the instructions are a little bit advanced for a n00b like me. if anyone can help me out i would really appreciate it.

oh, and im using suse 9.2 pro

alsa driver is probably the best to use, but first of all just play around with the mixer (volume) settings. Run a mixer (volume control), whatever the default is on SuSE, I don't know (probably kmix). Look for the obscure controls at the end, with labels like IEC958, and twiddle! Usually you have to either mute or unmute one of these oddly named volume controls to switch to digital output.
