Hi guys, first post here on [H]ard Forums :)
Anyhow I've just got a question in reference to the 'source' which is intended to power my Sennheiser HD595 headphones. Currently I have yet to purchase an amplifier but the Perreaux SHX1 is on the way (because it is designed and distributed right here in my country - New Zealand). Currently my 595's are connected through my Audigy 2 ZS and seem to sound ok (these are the 50 impedance version so its not as hard to power).

Basically I am considering on purchasing a cheap individual CD player, which I intend to connect up to the Perreaux SHX1. Basically does it really matter what CD player I choose to buy? I'm just slightly confused as I figured the the Perreaux would be doing 'most of the work' however I was sure the CD player had something to do with the sound quality. Any clarifications?

Lastly, would the Perreaux (in connection to my PC) be a significant step up from my current connection?

Ok thought about something else instead. Could I just use my current Panasonic DVD / CD Player as a decent source?
 
yeah, a DVD player is fine.

Maybe in the future you may want to move to an outboard DAC, but that is your choice, some people never go to outboard DACs, I won't since I will be moving towards DVD-A and SACD, neither of which support any industry standard form of digital out :(

For now my CD player for my head-fi rig is the DVD-rom drive on my desktop, and a Sony discman, so there :p
 
About the only thing I've read as far as cd-players go tends to deal with portables. According to the guys on head-fi, newer portable cd players tend ot have an aggressive anti-skip protection and from what I've seen they all hate what it does to the sound.

As far as home cd players go.. you probably need quite the setup to notice the difference between the majority of decent brands out there.

I'm no audiophile but I do appreciate good sound. I also thought my Panasonic should be a decent enough source, so looks like I'll be using this for the time being.
 
Suggestion just to tempt your wallet:

If you can find a Chaintech AV-710 in NZ, you will hear a HUGE difference. If I had to put a number to it, I'd say it improved the sound quality about 5x more then adding an amp to the Audigy2 did. Absolutely different sound for a very low price.

Lol I tend to get very tempted when people suggest things to me. Yes I've read a heap of comments that suggested the Chaintech over the Audigy 2, but NZ doesn't seem to have these available. Chaintech vidoecards are really the only component avaiable, but the AV-710 is no where to be seen. I've been completing some international orders lately, so if I choose to get the AV-710 I can always consider buying from aboard.

Will have a little think about this :)
