Over the past year, I've been listening closely to my sound system, and here's what I've come to conclude.

This is my setup:

PC/HT audio setup:
Cambridge MC50 front/center
Megaworks 510D sub
Sonance Mariner 100 rear
All connected to Onkyo TX-SR500 via Audigy 2ZS 5.1 multichannel input

My room has been unusually hot these past two days due to the weather, so I've been able to come to the conclusion better.

My particular setup performs best when all components have been on and can be considered "hot". My receiver is a bit hot, and so is the sub. When the system is in this condition, the sound that's output is not tinny, and the bass response is nice and tight. Details are not colored, and everything sounds right.

However, in the winter, my room gets extremely cold, and when I get home, turn on my rig and start listening to some music, I usually find myself changing some setting (bass, treble, what have you) in order to get it to "sound good."

What do you think of this strange theory? I'm confident I ain't kidding myself, because I'm the type of dude that is very sensitive to my PC sound.
 
im no scientist, but maybe the humidity makes the sound "warmer", and not as flat as it would be in cool/dry air.

go ask a physics prof about how sound waves travel in varying temperatures/humidity.
 
If it isn't the placebo effect, which is by no means certain since you're not talking blind testing here, I doubt it's the propagation of the sound waves themselves through the air.

I'd say it's likely the temperature either affects your hearing subtly by reducing the viscosity of the ear lubricant (earwax) your ear hairs are bathed in, or it affects the output of the electronics.

Most likely of all I'd say is the impact very cold temperatures would have on driver surrounds, probably making them less elastic and modifying their properties somewhat.

Many speaker manufactueres recommend allowing their speakers to equilibrate with room temperature after they've been shipped in cold weather to reduce the strain on surrounds.

I'll wager the "stiff surround" issue is what you're hearing.
The solution? Heat your room! ;)

That sounds like it. Oh well. I guess I'll have to heat my room this winter. Time to find a cheap heater!!:D
 
Probably the elasticity of the surrounds.

For new speakers/headphones, you will notice a sound change as time goes on due to the speakers "breaking in" I think this mostly mean the surroundings.

Anyhoo.
