Soundcard/Speaker/Setup Question

Situation:
Building a new rig, want to make sure I never put anything made by or related to Creative in a machine again. Also the owner of a ps3 and a 24" ws monitor to use the ps3 and the new rig on as of this week.

Limitations:
First of all, I am the antichrist of audioland, I really can't hear the differences. I know because my father and his buddies when I was growing up were freaks about it. Second of all I'd like to stay relatively cheap, say $600 max for the board + speakers. The most major limiting factor though is space. Renting in San Francisco, SqFt is premium. I dont need a woofer because I could never use it without pissing off downstairs neighbors and I dont want more then 2 speakers; due to more cords and lack of space.

Goals:
A setup that works for both the PC and PS3, providing decent audio quality, esp at high volume (music on weekends 'natch). I can't stress enough that I dont have much of an ear for this stuff.

TIA

If you just want two speakers, you will be highly satisfied with the AudioTrak Prodigy HD2 sound card, and at $75 you'll get the quality and features of a card twice it's price. As for speakers, if you want to run passive speakers (not powered) you'll have to get an amp to run them. But you can also run powered speakers too, aka Active monitors. This would be the ideal way to go since you have a budget of $600 and don't want a bunch of clutter. Having $525 left after getting the sound card, you can get a pair of very nice monitors that will sound lovely, have a healthy serving of bass (which you can adjust as needed) and won't have to worry about any other components to buy or hook up. I'd suggest Behringer B2031A Truth Active Monitors for $340 at zzsounds.com. And there you have it, a sick setup for just over $400.

Yup. Sounds about what you want. Easy, good, durable, no pissing the neighbors off.
