I currently have an Audigy2 but since I just updgraded my headphones to Sennheiser HD580's I'm in the market for something that will handle my music a little better. I am, however, a very avid gamer, but I have never been impressed with EAX as it seems to do little more than kill frame rates. I've been looking at the Revo 5.1; is the positional audio on that good enough for a serious FPS player?
 
I'm sorry to say this, but enabling any positional audio at all whatsoever on that Revo will kill your framerates even more than EAX ever did on your current A2. That's because the Revo has no hardware support at all for any of the widely used 3D positional audio APIs - and any such support is at software driver emulation level, which sends all audio processing to your system's main CPU. And the Revo's drivers eat up more CPU processing power when processing 3D positional audio than most other soundcards would.

A simple opamp replacement on your Audigy card = Revo ownage. :)

What Burr Brown opamps?
The last time I checked 8620 = Analog Devices. :p
Try it sometime.... Even on the 1212 m replacing those 29 cent "industry standard" opamps makes a major difference. ;)
 
I know, but you've spoke fondly of Burr-Brown op-amps in the past... ;)

I am considering the op-amp switchout on my own 1212M...
 
Actually I favor the AD chips but their extremely detailed top end can be a little overwhelming if not matched to the speaker system (this is what makes them well suited for the 1212m and it's recessed top end).
In this case the 8620 has excellent synergy with the HD580s, not to mention most of the dual channel SO8 Burr Brown chips tend to suck by comparison.... or is that because I have became to acclimated with the 8610's sonic signature? :D

Modded Audigy 2 ZS also = Chaintech AV-710 ownage.

But really, I was considering getting a Revo a while back, but decided to go the A2 ZS root instead. I'm pretty glad I did. The opamp replacement really does make a difference. I recently got the AV-710 to see what all the hype was about, and although a nice card for the price, it's really only good for music, and still doesn't sound as good as the modded A2.
 
It costs a fraction of the price of an Audigy 2--what did you expect? I would say that in stereo, the AV-710 sounds 95% as good as an Audigy 2 ZS.

Like I said, it's a good card for the price. You get what you pay for.
