I formatted today and I'm having problems with audio. I think my mistake was installing DirectX before installing the AC97 drivers. When I run dxdiag and click on the sound tab it reports that no sound card is installed. In the device manager, however, it says the AC97 chip (integrated on my Abit IC7) is working fine. When I try to play a song in Winamp it reports "Bad DirectSound Driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078". Anybody know what I can do?
 
which DX version did you install?

You probably have dozens of games which have DX drivers on them.
 
9.0c ... from Microsoft's website. I haven't installed any games, this is a fresh format
