Soundcard or Reciever?

Im looking to upgrade my audio for my pc.

My current setup consists of:

Speakers – old 1970's Sansui AA-3900. 8" woofer and 2"-3" tweeter. They give pretty good sound but i dont want to wear them out since they are pretty old. The best thing is they give pretty nice bass down to about 40Hz and the tweeter is almost exactly at my ear height.
Amp – National Panasonic (Yes, before it was Panasonic lol) RA-6500.
Sub – A DSE 10" 100w sub. Its the first revision from 08 or so, not the current crap one (though its still pretty bad lol).
Headphones – AKG44. Dont use these much, only for night time and lans.

The audio goes out of my computer into an NEC Surround Decoder AVD-700 which i use to select audio between my PC, PS3 and Recording DAW (thats all i use it for).

On my rig i mainly do:
-40% Music
-40% Gaming
-20% Watching mkv's

Im thinking either:
-Asus Essence ST (good for music + HF amp).
-Creative Titanium HD (good positional sound for BC2/CSS/TF2 and overall good gaming card).
-Grabbing a Pioneer VSX520 and some bookshelf speakers down the road (not sure what type).

What do you think?

my motherboards onboard sound sucks. Also this stuff is old and i feel it should be used on the off occasion and not used till it dies. It takes up a fair bit of desk space as well.

Soundcard would be good for lans and such as well as positional sound or headphone amp and good DAC, and receiver would be good if i wanted to do 5.1 in my room. Would also be good for a proper sub output and not just the low pass filter and having a better video/audio switcher than the NEC Surround Decoder (which just uses time delay to simulate surround sound though my setup is only 2.1 atm lol)

I dont really watch movies so 5.1 would probably be a waste, but if i futher upgrade the system after this one, i could put the AV receiver upstairs on the htpc and get rid of the crappy tv speakers.

I would go with a good receiver to start. The Denon 591 is my current budget-ish favorite.

Sorry should of said, i live in Australia. The denon's are pretty hard to find here it seams, the only one i found was $600 and i can grab the pioneer for $350. Would the denon be worth the extra? I do like it has 1080p up-scaling, but im not sure it has enough inputs for me.

I need:
-PC audio (optical?)
-PC2 audio (RCA from my MOTU 828MKII)
-PS3 audio

I could run the ps3 into the receiver has hdmi, but my tv is only component (40" old scool plasma).
