hey everyone, this is my first post here but definately not my first visit, i've been reading threads on here for a few years now and it's just been great.

i have a question about some of my pc-audio equipment. right now i have an abit nf7-s motherboard that has an nvidia mcp-t with soundstorm, and from that i have an optical cable running to a creative ddts-100 decoder, and from that i have a klipsch 5.1 ultra speaker system.

so, my question is: is the SNR determined by the device your speakers are plugged into? i have searched almost everywhere i can think of to find specs on my decoder telling me it's SNR. and they are nowhere to be found. not even a frequency response... i'm beginning to think that my onboard sound's SNR and frequency response are what is hindering my speakers potential and that the decoder in fact does not have anything to do with the SNR sent to the speakers. the reason i ask is because if the sound card is limiting the SNR sent to the speakers then i am REALLY missing out on the speakers true potential, seeing as how my onboard sound only produces 75db SNR. whereas if i were to purchase the new x-fi i'd be getting 109db.... which is only 6db away from my speaker system's max (115db).

if anyone can help me out here it would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!
 
Yup.....You are using the S/PDIF interface on the onboard sound so the analog specs don't apply and the only ones that really matter are the specs of the speakers and the decoder.
 
hmmm... then that's really weird because i seriously cant find specs for my decoder ANYWHERE. i've even emailed creative about it and all they did was send me a pdf of the product documentation, which says nothing about the audio specs.
 
has anyone tried plugging their speakers into both the ddts-100 and x-fi to see the difference?
