Sound Skipping Issue

I am currently running the specs below. Specifically, the onboard audio is the CMI 9739.

In nearly all games that I have played since building my new system a month ago, I have noticed that the overall sound will get quieter and I will not hear all the sounds occurring around me when there is a large fire fight. It seems that some sounds are being skipped, missed or just not played. Often, I will not hear my own gun firing. This has happened in Call of Duty, Counterstrike and now in Planetside. This same problem occurred with the drivers on my Epox motherboard install disk and I hoped that the latest driver download would clear the issue up. Unfortunately, it has not. When the action is light, I must say that the sound is very good and I really enjoy it, especially through headphones.

Any thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated.
