Sound Setting Problems

Greetings

I got a little question, I used to have a soundblaster awe 64 gold stereo soundcard (ISA) that allowed me to change the advanced tone settings in windows , now i got a new computer and it's with a 5.1 soundcard onboard (barton 2500+ on a asus a7v600 mobo , tried 2 other soundcards aswell ) and now i can't change these settings .

I know for some of u this isn't a problem but my computer is hooked up to the stereo system and it sounds like crap now ( system : marantz stereo amp + jbl Lx 800 ). Now my question is this : Is it because it's a surround card now that i can't change this setting ?

Yes ? then this should be fixxed with a normal stereo soundcard
No ? Can someone tell me what to do because i've tried everything i can think of ( testing other cards, swithing onboard sound off , flashing bios etc etc )

I know there is software from most soundcards that got a EQ but this isn't what i'm used to hear , it modulates the sound to much , i only need the simpel bass and treble setting enabled.
