Sound randomly failing; perplexed

I don't even know where to begin explaining this...

Seemingly completely at random, my computer will sometimes lose most of its sound output. I know nothing about the situation except the symptoms:
  • There is no interface sound from Windows (link clicking, folder opening etc.)
  • Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player can play sound files with no problem but Winamp cannot play them at all.
  • Until today, the only way I knew of to cause this to happen was to play World of Warcraft for an extended period of time. Today, it happened after a few minutes of configuring my Winamp playlist and playing random songs on it.
  • When I run dxdiag, the automatic directsound test completes successfully but the manual test fails.
  • The only way to fix the problem is to restart.
  • In Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, all sound works perfectly. In World of Warcraft, The music and effects cut out but the ambient sound and voices are still audible. (I chose these two games because they're the only ones on my computer.)
For sound drivers, I am using the nForce 2 chipset on the A7N8X Deluxe motherboard. I downloaded the latest drivers but there was no installer so i copied all of the files into system32 (where there existed older versions of each file). I do not know if this was the correct thing to do.
