Sound proofing a room...

Just moved into a new room, and it shares a wall with my family. I'm looking for a way to soundproof the room, so I can game, play music, watch videos, etc (etc being drink and party) without keeping people up all night.

Any suggestions? I'd like to do it fairly inexpensively, if possible, too. Oh, and gutting the walls is not an option, so it must be an external solution.

Um, yeah, you see, I would have to gut the walls to glue those things to the studs, and thats exactly what I said I didn't want to do. I suppose I could attach them to the sheetrock instead... do we think that would work. Just sorta tacking them to the wall instead of gluing them in layers inside the wall? And dare I ask what these cost?

I can't wear headphones. It gives me a headache.

My budget is as low as possible, I'm a college student. And I want a new laptop more than I want my family to sleep well :)

I'm thining less like 440 wall mounted sound deadener, and more like tacking egg crate to the wall. I want to get the most affect for the least money.
 
lots and lots of really really thick blankets tacked up to the wall. \

i'm talking LOTS of blankets to create lots of layers. that or foam.
 
How about buy alot of those sheets that you use for silencing PCs and layering them on your walls? :D
 
Because those sheets are expensive, and it's a big wall.

I'm not sure I have that many blankets to spare... Would layering egg crate make it more effective? Should I put foam behind egg crate? Is there special soundproof egg crate, or can I buy a mattress pad from Blood Bath and Beyond and just tack it up?
 
Yeah I was going to edit my post. I was thinking that you could just put up some heavy duty poles along the wall and create a sort of wall curtain with some thick quilts. Two or three nice winter thick quilts should lower the noise levels some. For a little while I used some foam "sheets" (they where like 3x6) along the walls and a mattress against the door to do this before and that worked nicely. Crate look like they won't work very well because of all of the open space, I could be totally wrong.
 
I know egg crate gets used in sound rooms and such, but I think that's more to kill reverb and echo than anything else. Don't know if that'll help dampen sound on the other side or not...
