Ok, little bit of back story. For the past week or so, when im playing TFC(hl mod) My sound will just randomly drop for everything and the only way to get any sound back is to reboot.

k Now up to today (this post is from another forum)

Ok, now this has really got me stumped, I was playing need for speed underground and it was working fine. I was listening to Winamp at the same time. The audio for Winamp just died, but the audio for NFSU2 worked fine. So I alt tab and try and see if the song just got stoped or something and when I tried to start the song it just says no. Nothing happens when I double click the song, or click the play button or goto the options menu and tell it to play. So I figure something happened to Winamp so I close it and open it up again and song still wont start, So I tried it in WMP and to my surprise it worked. So i open Ventrillo and joined my normal server, no noise happened. So I open MSN no noise. Webpages dont make noise(like the little click in IE). But NFSU2 and WMP both still work. The only way to get audio back is to reboot.

Also I used to use winamp and have my Speakers in the other speaker plug(for surround) and have my headphones in the main jack. Ever since i updated to the drivers that introduced NVMIXER I can no longer do that. Winamp does not recognize my speakers in the alternate port, BUT WMP does. Ventrillo doesnt recognize it, neither does msn. This has really got me stumped. Anyone have any insight?

Ive also run dxdiag and tried doing the sound playback when I have no sound and I cant hear it.

IMO, the newer versions of winamp SUCK. I deleted that steamy pile a long time ago.

Since you didn't specify, I'm going to assume you have some troublesome soundcard like a Soundblaster live or something similar.

The first thing I would try is to delete the soundcard from the device manager and reboot. Let Windows detect and install the default windows drivers, not the manufacturers. Then, hit windows update to see if MS has newer default drivers for your soundcard.

You should also re-seat your soundcard in your MB. It may have creeped out of the socket a little bit.

Im actually using the onboard audio on my DFI Infiniti NFII

There was also a bunch of other things like i rolled bac my drivers and that didnt help.
