I installed all the drivers that came on the mb's cd, which includes the Realtek audio driver.
I tried playing a sample windows media audio file that came with windows, but windows media player gives an error saying "Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding." I have speakers built into my monitor, so I connected that to the green audio out jack. I then used the sound test under realtek's hd audio manager (red volume icon in the bottom right corner), and sound does come out in this case.
