Hello all, im having sound issues. I bought a new hp pavilion a630n desktop. I automatically put some of my old hardware in the new box, one being sound card. This hp has a lot of sound ports that i want to use and i didnt realize that i had put the sound card in and it was the primary audio device until i went to use the front ports and slapped myself in the head. So i took it out the sound card and now when i try to do anything that pertains to audio i get an error...for example in sonique it says: Error opening audio device...A device id has been used that is out of range for your system". It might be helfpul to know that i installed windows xp professional instead of using the default xp home edition. I have gone to my device manager and have yet to be able to get anything to install to help me on this. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks all.

Did you remove the sound card properly in Windows? If you didn't that can cause all sorts of problems later on. Go to your device manager and try to un-install it. Also un-install all the drivers and software that came with it. Finally, check that the onboard sound is enabled in the the BIOS.
ok, If i get what you are saying right you did the following.
1. Got a new computer.
2. Put your old sound card in.
Did you do the following?
1. Disable the onboard sound in the bios?
2. Hook up the front sound ports with your new card? (I think you have to do that

)I went into my bios and changed from auto to enabled for onboard sound. Still the same error, as far as my sound card goes i never installed any special drivers, windows had it all. I have a few devices that need to be installed under device manager: Multimedia Controller, Multimedia Video Controller, PCI Device, SM Bus Controller, Video Controller, and Video Controller(VGA Compatible). Under my sound, video, and game controllers: Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture devices, Media Control Devices, and video codecs. I went to HP's site and couldnt find any drivers to dl but it suggest going to the HP tools and so forth...only problem is is i dont have the partition where they stored all of that and im runing pro not home edition. Any other ideas?

Ok Cool Ethan here is the problem. Windows detects your card, however it does not have all the special software that is needed to run the sound card. You need to install the drivers that came with the Sound Card to make it work. Also putting the onboard sound on "enabled" is not what you want. You want disabled if that is an option.

That may be the problem. If you BIOS disabled on-board sound, midi and gameport, then installed the sound card, booted... cancel out of the driver install and run the soundcard CD.
Don't forget to reserve an IRQ for the soundcard.
