Shot in the dark here because a quick google search didn't turn anything up.

Is there such a thing as essentially a network attached sound card? Basically a DAC with a NIC that outputs to 5.1 on 3.5mm jacks? That I can send my PC's audio to? I'm not looking for a settop box. Just transparent audio send.

There is a program that can do this.

OR maybe NAS. Sounds like this may work as well.

Either way, you would have to have a PC or other device that outputs 5.1 where you want to plug the speakers in.

In any case, I wasn't able to find something exactly like you are looking for.
If there were something premade like that it would require special software for the functionality to work over the network.

Edit:
Here is an idea.
Get a network USB hub

And a USB sound card of your choice.

I don't know a specific device that fits your requirements, but in the world of pro audio it's all about Dante.

https://www.audinate.com/products/dante-enabled

AVR with network capability

Looked at the Dante stuff... ummm, pretty sure none of that has 5.1 and 3.5mm jacks... plus those are going to be really expensive and not small.

AVR is also going to be huge and none I could find would offer what is being asked for. Pretty much everything I looked at would at the minimum require DLNA and non would have 3.5 jacks.
