Building new rig, Sandy Bridge 2500K on a Asus P8P67 Deluxe motherboard.

From a sound point of view, I will mainly be gaming and mainly be using headphones with a mic. I do have a 7.1 speaker system, but usually only use it as a 5.1, which I rarely use (use headphones).

Will the onboard mobo sound be sufficient for gaming sound?
If not, what recommendations are there for a sound card, keeping in mind the above sound usage?

If you use headphones, consider some of the USB DACs by Nuforce. They feature nice headphone amplifiers as well as RCA outputs that you could use to hook up a more powerful amplifier for use with speakers or whatever. They range from $100 to $450, depending on how nice you want it to be and what features you want. Although, your onboard really should be sufficient. Only get something better if you are a big audio nerd (no problem, there are many of us).
 
What headphones do you use? If they're of great quality then would suggest investing in an Asus Xonar Essence STX, Titanium HD or an external DAC/Amp.
If you're only looking for a solution for gaming however then you should be fine with on board.
