I currently have a dfi nforce4 mobo with Realtek ALC850(8-Ch) onboard sound. I was wondering if buying a pci sound card would improve performance in gaming? I know the really expensive sound cards would be a big upgrade. But my question is...is there a <40$ sound card that would significantly improve my sound quality as well as boosting my performance in gaming? Thanks for all your input and suggestions.

Oh yeah i have a pair of logitech x-220's right now and probably will end up getting some 5.1's in the future.
 
Interestlingly DFI did an astounding job with designing that board with that codec, to the point that not other maker has, and the impact CPU wise in you're paticular case is very minimal. Check out the reviews for you're board. Apparently the shielding issues are minimized. I would use onboartd with that board, and i rarely recommend using onboard.

Ok since the onboard doesnt stress the cpu much, which is more important to me than actual sound quality, i think i'll keep the onboard. Thanks for the quick info.
